Starting Out

I am 2 weeks out from RNY lap surgery. Doc told me to start some light exercises.  I am still having some pain on my left side and not able to walk standing straight up yet. We are waiting for 1 stitch inside to dissolve and then all should be well.

So, my question is, is it ok that I do resistance bands and the stationary bike until I feel I cant do it no more.. or should I just set a time limit on both and then up it as possible? And does it matter to do it in the AM or PM, I'm more of a night owl, but I don't want to exercise and be WIDE awake for hours after...

Thanks,

I would wait a couple more weeks before starting to exercise. I dont know what your docs definition of light exercise is, but you just had major surgery, and even if you are starting to feel better, you still need enough recovery time before exercising. Since you can't walk upright, I wouldnt even THINK about starting to exercise.  LIght walking might be okay, but id hold off on the bike and resistance bands for a while. Just my opinion though.

Were you exercising before surgery?  The reason I ask is because if you were, then you can return quicker.

If you were not, I'd limit my exercise for now to just walking.  As much as you can handle, and listen to your body. Today you may want to walk a mile, tomorrow you may only be good for a block.  And that is okay.

At around week 4 you may want to try the resistance bands...but be careful as anything to do with weights will affect your core, and your incisions may still hurt.

Welcome to the loser's bench and I'm so proud you are incorporating exercise from the beginning.  It is essential in maintaining overall good health.

Every surgery such as lap surgery or physiotherapy. Doctors advise us to take proper rest until we getrecovered fully. If you are not fully cofortable then take more rest and get recovered first fully then do bike riding or any thing else you ant to do.
