Asthma and running- any sucessful people who can?
I'm trying to keep on track- I need to loose at least 20 more lbs. I'm 18 mo post op now, and have lost 108. My own effort, or lack of has been slow. I do work 3 (12 hour) shifts a week, so I only work out on my off days.
I've been able to do 50 min on the elypitcal, and so proud of that. I have Asthma with a capital A! My lungs do not play. I have been hospitalized 6 times, most recent in 2009. I've had pulmonary function test recently and they were normal. The specialist said my lungs are strong, but sadly they still "react" to illness, cold air, exercise, smoke, ect. I have a Xopenex inhaler (better than proventil as this one does not have the bad cardiac effects of high heart rate and jitteriness) I was told I can take it as often as I need to exercise.
Today, I ran/walked (50/50) for 1.5 miles on a YMCA track. Last time I could not breath deep and had pain in my chest. I took the inhaler 4 times today, and seemed to do better- more running/less walking.
Have you been sucessful running with Asthma? I'd like to have fitness goals as well, to keep my weight off and I've always wanted to be a runner. Now I realize my body may not agree (bad knees and back too) but I'm not giving up yet.
Thanks!

My asthma is exercise induced, and does not sound even remotely as serious as yours... but I now take Singulair an hour before exercise and it is now possible for me to run in humid weather, as well is cold, dry weather. it's been life-changing for me, but not sure if it is appropriate for you. Definitely worth asking about!

Tonya I went to the Police Academy in upstate NY about 20 years ago with exercise enduced asthma. We had to run 3 miles every day and sometimes 5 miles...and this after already done about an hour of stretching, push ups sit ups etc etc. I used the inhalor before every session and made it through even on hot muggy Albany summer days.
You might want to look at the mini trampoline as it has benefits superior to that of running. Good luck and happy new year!
