Heart rate monitors
I met with my cardiologist today, and he cleared me for "normal" exercise - he said spin class, and running are fine. He said he'd like to see my keep my heart rate under 152. Because of my medicine (a beta blocker), my heart rate rarely goes above 140-145 during my hard workouts, so I dont think that will be a problem.
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions/recommendations for a heart rate monitor. I went looking at some, but I have no idea what I should be looking for.

if you want purely for Indoor I would probably go with Polar as it synchs with a lot of the fitness equipment. If you are wanting to take the party outdoors and want more info such as pace distance and such then you might look at Garmin HRM with a built in GPS.
My main reason for saying Polar indoors is that I have had and read about others with the same issues with Garmin HRMs where you will get spikes and as the battery power goes down so does the accuracy. I have actually seen mine spike to 240 (AND I LIVED!) when I knew it should be in the 160s. People have found workarounds for some of the issues.
Cost is also going to be a factor you need to consider.
Glad to hear you worked with the doctor and didn't give up. MAJOR PROPS!

Polar makes the best HR monitors. Garmin is best if you want GPS in your multi-spor****ch. If you are doing a lot of indoor workouts, then I'm guessing you don't though.
Anyway, I'm glad your doc said you can exercise!

Hi acbbrown,
Glad you got cleared for exercise. That's a really big step. Now you're on the path to looking and feeling even better than you already do.
There's a lot to consider when getting a heart rate monitor. Indoors, outdoors, chest strap, wrist strap, cost, brand, and so on.
You can buy one pretty much anywhere. But the best thing to do is some independent research. I found something on About.com that you might like:

Hope this helps.
