Well, I'm tired of walking the steepest climbs, so I ordered an 11-36 setup for my bike.
It has a long mountain bike derailleur on the back and a 36 tooth large cog.  I was looking at it today and that thing looks like a dinner plate compared to what I had before.

I'm taking it in for installation on Friday.  The guy at the bike store said I should be able to climb the steepest of hills in this area with that setup.

Looking forward to noodling up those long climbs.  That will be infintely better than walking.  It should actually take a lot of time off my rides.  The combo of being able to ride up the hill/not walking and not blowing myself up trying to climb them should allow me to ride harder on the flats as well.

It's all good in theory, I'm looking forward to putting it to the test.

I went with the 11-28 and it made such a difference in climbing for me.  I guess you'll miss some of the middle gears, but in my experience, I am always mostly in 1 extreme or the other :)

I'm right there with you on that.  It seems like on the flats I'm in the big ring/small cog combo and when its uphill small ring/big cog combo, I could probably live with 3-5 gears max.

no shame in that!  your lowest gears just have walkers now :)
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??
