My toenail fell off!
This story should solidify why good running shoes are so important! My 2nd toe on both feet is much longer than the big toe. (I know, gross-but I can pick things up with them....I know, grosser!)
Anyway.....for about a year and a half I ran weekly in off the rack running shoes.....I'd never been fitted. After a run I'd notice that the "head" of those 2nd toes hurt. Then about 6 months ago I noticed that the nail was bluish black like I'd injured it. I figured I'd hit it and didn't remember. About 4 months ago I got fitted for "real" running shoes and they are a full size bigger than my old ones....all of my toes have breathing room! And I no longer have pain in these toes when I run!
However, the damage was done....this past weekend the toenail fell off one of my toes! There is a new nail already growing in......but it kind of freaked me out and it also ruined my pedi!! The same toenail on the other foot is a little purple, but holding on.....I never linked the pain in those toes to real damage from my poorly fitted shoes.
So all that said............proper shoes are a must!!

Congrats on losing the toenail!!!!
When I first went to get fitted I was surprised to find that they were puttig me in shoed that I tought were too big. I was wearing a 12 at the time and they were putting me in 13 and one time with an Avia shoe they put me in a 14. I have found that you almost can't go too big.

Awesome and congrats on the milestone .
Just so you know being fitted for running shoes doesn't mean you won't get black toenails or they won't fall off. The big toe on both my feet have been black for a a little over 2 months now and I was fitted.
As everyone has told me "Wear it with pride you earned it!"
