Want to train for a 5K

Hi folks -

Like many others, with this weight removed, I want to attempt things I've never tried before, like rock climbing or a 5K race.  Anyone know of a good place that lists regional 5K races in advance?  By the time I hear of a 5K race in my area, it's about a week away, and I'm going to need quite a bit of training for this first one.

Thanks for any hints.

Not sure about the list of races in your area but I know a good program for you to train for them.

Look up the couch to 5k program. It is wonderful

Hey thanks!

I did look this up in the App Store, but there are 3 with that title!

One is by Felt Tip, with a brown icon.
One is by Active Network, with a blue icon
One is by Bluefin Software, with a green icon

Which one were you referring to?

Runningintheusa.com should be able to point you in the right direction. It has state and city filters that allow you to search out local or destination events.

Have fun!

I use the couch to 5k by Heavy Duty Apps from the App store.  I love it.  My workout playlist can play while I do it.   I love the app.   I hope to run/jog my first 5K in December.  Best of luck to you!!!

Go to http://c25k.com They have links to EVERYTHING Couch to 5k including free podcasts, descriptions of the how the program works, forums to talk about it...

To find a local race, go to Active.com to start.  Also  look for flyers at your local sports/running/triathlon store. There are 5k races almost every week around here!

Coolrunning.com is another site that will list some local races.  You can also search for race timming companies and running clubs in your area that might have a list of races.

ok, well everyone's got you covered.

I guess I can add that local running stores often have calendars of upcoming events.  And while you are there, get fitted for proper running shoes.  You really don't want to do any real amounts of running and/or walking with whatever you bought off the rack.

By running store - Not a Dick's Sporting Goods or other large retail chain, I mean a specialty running store.  Their associates watch you run and walk in socks and fit you with shoes appropriate for your gait.  Worth every penny!!

What are things to make sure of when I get fitted for running shoes?
