Stupid question about Running!

For those of you who run regularly. How do you breathe? I've started running on the treadmill and find my chest burning and my breathing is really heavy. How do I fix this so I can last longer and still be able to breathe?

If you can't breath, you are running too fast for your level of fitness.

Start out slower and if you don't feel your breathing comes natural you can breathe in and out with the rhythm of your steps. For each two or three steps breathe in and then out for the same. Example - in-in, out-out, in-in, out-out or in-in-in, out-out-out, in-in-in, out-out-out with each step you take.

Have you tried the progam "Couch to 5k" It has you walk for so many seconds than run for so many seconds then you repeat. It is a 6-9 week program. It really helped me.

The couch to 5K is a great program,  its the one I am doing right now.... it helps run for a while, then walk (it helps me catch my breath gradually)  Here is a link to the program.

Hope this helps!

what everyone else said.  and practice.  the longer you do it, the longer you can do it.  but slow down a bit and increase time/distance slowly. You can do it!

I am new to the treadmill. I had double knee replacement a year ago Oct 11th and am wondering if there is anyone out there who has also had knee replacement who is now running. at the moment I am doing brisk walking which seems to be fine but the last thing I want to do cause undo stress on my knees.

I am interested in varying my exercise routine. I love to exercise big time and find it is a key factor in my weight loss journey- I have lost 160 lbs since April 1st 2010. Have another 32 lbs to reach goal.
Any treadmill routines are most welcome.

I am 64 soon to be 65 and yesterday I did 30 min on the treadmill. I was able to get my heart up into target range 108-118.

Looking for pointers, Sarah

Regarding the running:  I think that is an answer your doctor would be best suited to answer.
Most treadmills have built in programs at varying levels starting at 20 minutes and going up to an hour. I'd suggest trying those out.

I am a Couch to 5K fan also! The program really has helped me. You run 3 times a week and  increase your running every week. This really helps your body get accustomed to running. Please check it out. You'll be glad you did!
