Race day
UGH,
It's just a little sprint. It will be over before it starts, and of course that means I can't sleep.
I'm going to spend more time driving back and forth than I will racing., but I had to get in one tri this year.
After seeing that the water temp is supposed to be 58 degrees, I decided to pack the wetsuit.
It will probably take me more time to get out of the wetsuit than I want, but 58 degrees sounds chilly.
I'm a total wimp when it comes to cold things these days; I'm like a little hairless chihuahua.
I hope everyone has a great day

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
Well it was a good day, but I was too smart for my own good, and cost myself a 2nd place finish.
I figured that since I hadn't been swimming and I'm generally in **** poor condition for anything besides a bike ride, I'd enter the Clydedale division (aka fat dudes) Well I came in 6 out of 13 people.
If I had entered my age group instead, I would have gotten some bling, because my time was good enough for 2nd in my age group.
I guess I'm to a point where my age is more detrimental than my weight or lack of training HAHAHAHAH
The day was nice, Sacramento weather was pretty good, but the freaking river was 58 degrees and moving pretty fast. 2 years ago when I did this race, there was actually a beach where everyone stood and waited for their waves. This year the water was high enough, that there was no beach.
There are two bridges maybe 300-400 yards apart. Well the water was moving quick enough that with just a 200 yard swim, the first wave ended up pushed down by the second bridge, so they probably swam close to 400 yards, with 200 of those being back up stream against the current.
I saw people treading water, people grabbing the safety kayaks etc. It's not like it was white water or anything, but I don't think anyone expected it to be like that. The surface of the water certainly didn't give any indication of how fast it was moving.
The worst part of the swim besides the fact that I still suck and that the water was so freaking cold that it took my breath away is that when you get to the other side, there is a single file ladder that you have to use to get up the side of the bridge. People are all disoriented from the swim, don't have their land legs etc, and if you get stuck behind them, you are waiting ther to get out of the water and up the side of the hill while the people ahead of you are making time. So it certainly is important to be a good swimmer at this event. First across the water doesn't have to wait for anyone fumbling up the bank.
The ride was awesome, they announced this race as draft legal. Well for the first 4 miles, there was nobody to draft with, I was just blowing past them. Then around mile 4.5 or so there was a little overpass with some steepness (hills are my weakness) one person passed me and they were going a good speed, so I grabbed their rear wheel and let them pull me into transition. I felt like I could have repassed them, and they kept looking over their shoulder expecting me to pass, but I was happy to let them drag me.
The run was pretty good, my feet were still numb from the water and bike ride, but the new shoes rock. I had the same problem last time I did this race. My feet were so cold I never recovered feeling until after the race was over, and it hurt so bad that I had to walk. Today was not the same. The new shoes were so comfortable, that I was able to run even with the numb feet.
Again not a single person in my age group or division passed me on the run. I know I'm not a fast runner, so only one person passed me on the bike (not in my division) and nobody in my division passed me on the run, it's got to be the swim that killed me.
It was a nice day, I enjoyed the race. I took 7 minutes off my time from the last time I ran this race, so I won't complain especially since I haven't been training.
Hope everyone has a great day.

Yeah and the problem with the clydes is there is no age bracket.
So you might be racing some 18 y/o kid that plays middle linebacker for his high school
Yeah he is over 200 but in good condition and it's all muscle.
But you are reight those sprints are a blast.
Done in 30 minutes, got the rest of the day to play.

It's just that cold water.
I had a work around for subsequent races last year, but forgot to do it for this race.
I got some of those disposable hand warmers and put them in the toes of my cycling shoes. They warmed my feet up during the ride. It makes the run much more comfortable.

Awesome, I look forward to doing some of these next season as well. Thanks for sharing the event with us.
