Im 5 months out, been walking on treadmill(at 3.5 the highest) on the treadmill since 1 month out, doing weights as well. I want to take it to the next level and run, even a slow run but dont know where to start and cant really find anything on it online. I cant just start. Im scared to fall off, trip and make a total full of myself. I really want to, but scared to i guess. Any pointers? Thanks.

What is your goal? Do you want to run longer distances or just trying to get your heart rate up?

If youre afraid of the treadmill, and you do want to start running, I would suggest starting outside. I wish I had because now, even though I can jog on the TM, it's harder to jog the same distance outside (and I dont have any plans on running any races on the TM).

Check out Couch to 5K or other similar running plans where you start increasing your time gradually.

I am only about 3 months out and have been using Couch to 5k (via an app on my itouch) and i love it.   There is a free version for the first week but I think it only cost me about 2.99.  I am walking and jogging outside, but due to weather changes will have to get on the treadmill soon.  We will see how that works out!!!  Good luck!

I am a C25K failure well more of a dropout but it is a very good program.

The way I started running on the treadmill was to find a pace that I could hold, comfortably but with effort, for 3 miles, since my goal was a 5K.  Once I had established this pace I would then do various sessions designed to push my pace slowly but not for the whole distance at once.

I would do various intervals like (saying my base pace was 5mph).

.25 mile warm up 4.5
.25 mile @ 5
.25 mile @5.2
.25 mile @5.3

when I hit the speed that it was extremely difficult to do .25 miles I would then step down in the same pattern.

Another one I would do is negative splits.  each .50-1 mile I would increase speed this would result in the last mile being faster than the first.

in 1 year I was able to not only more than triple my distance but my half marathon pace is 5 minutes faster than what my 1 mile pace used to be.

The key is to remember it takes time.  Your body has to learn to not only adapt to the new demands running will put on your system but your body will also need to build and grow some required components to support this activity all of which is done through time and training.

You have found a great group of people here to support, cheer you on and get advice from.

In the words on Nike--JUST DO IT!  If you are scared you'll fall off, try running first while holding on...or better yet, it is Fall out, hit a trail.  Just jog until you can't anymore then walk....the only thing you need is desire and good shoes!
