Reactive Hypoglycemia and fueling a 60 mile walk?

Ive been having troubles with the scale and what I assume to be RH. Episodes of lightheadedness, dizzy, cold sweats, weak....Eat something and it immediately goes away. I also tested my blood sugar during one of these and it was in the 60s. I have an appt with the surgeon next week.

Ive never had any type of diabetes issues pre op.

I also had a 3 month stall right before my one year surgiversary and lost 8 lbs. Yay.

For the past month, Ive cut out as many carbs as I can...Phase 1 Atkins style.

My 60 mile walk (3 Days/20 miles per day) is in two weeks. Im wanting to fuel for this, but Im afraid of how I will react. I also assume at our pit stops, the snacks will be carb heavy. The last thing I want is to have an RH episode on the trail.

I've got RH too, and when I did my 7day bike ride from SF to LA, there was lots of carby choices that I indulged in...oh the PB and Jelly grahmwhiches YUMMO!!! but I digress...

So I did two things that saved me.

1) I brought my own protein (and shaker), in both powder and bar form that I have been using during training and I know doesn't cause any RH problems

2) I emailed the organizers and asked them what the meals and snacks were going to be like, as I had RH. They gave me all the info they had...and offered to transport a cooler filled with my food if I wanted!

Keep in mind though, that it's the simple carbs that will likely cause you to flare, not so much the complex ones (whole grains, veggies...etc..)

Bonne Chance,

Thanks so much for the help. I didnt think to ask them.

I was thinking of bringing protein bars with me, I already eat them and know Im good with them however, they have a chocolate coating and would be a melted mess. Maybe I could stuff them in the pocket of my CamelBak where the bladder is to keep them cooler.

Yeah, chocolate covered ones would probably be a melt-y mess, did you find out from the organizers what the food offering would be like?

This is all I know for sure so far:

"At each pit stop there will be an assortment of snacks including oranges, bananas, potato chips, carrots, peanuts, pretzels and much more. To drink, there will be water and sports drinks provided (you must bring your own water bottle to fill). About halfway through each day’s mileage, you will have a nutritious lunch. Each morning and evening at camp you will enjoy a hot catered meal."

I have read they usually have grilled chicken for lunch, so I know I'll be fine there. I sent an email asking for more info and still waiting for a response. At least I know I can eat peanuts!! ha ha

Well you said you're going to bring your camelbak, why not also bring some snacks and sugar-free electrolyte tabs like Nuun or Camelbak makes their own tabs (they're my personal fav).

You can bring jerky, peanut or almond butter pouches (I love Justins), protein to go pouches. I mean other than the fruit, it sounds like a lot of carb only options....and that would put me into a tailspin without protein!

I do like the Elixr and have a couple tube to bring. I think Im just getting into panic mode at this point since this is my first event like this of any kind. I had to go and start off with the BIG one!! ha ha. Go big or go home right??

I found an Atkins brand 'granola' bar that doesnt have chocolate on the outside. I may grab a couple of those on my way home tonight and see how I do.  I usually do PureProtein.

Thanks again for the tips. I really appreciate it!!

No problem, I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time!!

Have you seen my post on the RnY board about the Pure Protein bars? Have you tried the Quest Bar, they have one without a choco-coating and it has great stats.

Bonne Chance!!
