my new energy fuel
This will only be helpful a few more weeks for me, since it will cool off here sooner than I wish.... but I have now started adding frozen drinks to my sports nutrition. Being in MASS, there is a Dunkin' Donuts on every corner. When doing long runs, especially early in the morning, I find myself stopping at Dunks to replenish my water and/or Gatorade supply.
As the runs gets longer and often hotter since I'm running later into the morning, I'm running out of gas. GU and Gatorade just wasn't getting the job done. One day I was just so damn hot that I decided to get a Blue Raspberry Coolatta. I've never had a Coolatta of any kind before, since I would never consume a pure sugar drink like that (ok, unless it had alcohol in it...). Anyway, I picked this up at mile 8.5 and ran with it for 2 miles (when I finished it). Was the perfect pick me up! I made it to mile 16 with no energy problems!
Many folks can't handle that kind of sugar, and I do dump, but not when running - especially when I can smell the amonia of burning muscle. Cold drink in hand - sometimes America really does "run on Dunkin".

Cool........Literally! Glad you found another weapon in your nutrition arsenal. One others find strange that I do, in the middle of a long ride or run and I feel like I am fading, I will chug one of those little Starbucks espresso and cream shots in a can, gives me fire (in a good way).

puke! i can't imagine drinking anything with cream in it half way through an endurance workout :) now straight up coffee/expresso gels (must must must must have caffeine), now i can live with that!
Where are we going?? And why am I in this handbasket??
right now. somewhere. somebody is working harder than you.

Doesn't bother me for some reason. I drink a click espresso protein shake made with milk before all my workouts, even when running on hot day and never had an issue. I do love any gel that is coffee flavored and contains caffeine.

Oddly, i was able to run 2 miles after consuming an ice cream - kiddie size. I thought I'd feel sick, but I powered it out. love the sugar high.

I started using Payday bars on my long rides 200-1200k Brevet series. I haven't tried them on the run yet.
I stumbled across those on a long ride one day when I had to stop at a gas station for supplies. I didn't want any protein bars or anything like that because the damn things were melting it was so hot out. I found the little snack sized one like you give out at Halloween.
Anyhow there was a similar discussion going on with the Randon users group.
Almost unanimously everyone uses those payday bars.
I guess I had a lucky find. They do get soft, but they don't melt and get all nasty, at least they haven't yet. The little bite size bars are perfect because I don't have to worry about having left over pieces or covering the leftovers or getting it all of myself or my gear. Also because it is so small in size, it isn't enough to make me dump or feel crappy.
The down side is I can't stock a supply of them, or they would become a snack instead of a fuel.
So I have to buy them day of or night before the ride.
