Damn that sucked

So after eating dinner Friday night, I got this weird feeling that was like dumping but without the cold sweats.  I had a really bad series of abdominal cramps.
I went to lay down hoping it would pass just like the dumping.

Well it didn't pass.  After 2 hours of it, I tried vomiting it up, no success, I hoped that perhaps I had a bowel obstruction, or some stuck food, but couldn't pass anything out of either end.  I drug myself out to the front room and told my wife get me to the hospital.  It felt like someone had pushed their hand through my stomach and was grabbing handfulls of stomach and intestine and twisting it around.

I was in so much pain that the only thing I could do was hyperventilate, and dry heave.  I was hoping I would pass out from the hyperventilation and get some respite, I got to the point where my hands and fingers were tingling, but never managed to pass out.

They took x-rays and a cat scan.  They said it looked like a bowel obstructions.  They called the surgeon who had done my bariatric surgery and gall bladder.  He had them load me in an ambulance and run me down to his hospital.

What it ended up being was some of my intestine had an adhesion to a cancer surgery I had over 5 years ago and it had herniated and twisted around the adhesion, blocking off my intestine.

They rushed me into surgery and started cutting.
So now I look and feel like I had bariatric surgery all over again.  My stomach is black and blue and swolen and full of gas and fluid.  The pictures he gave me are pretty nasty looking part of it is all red and strangulated looking and part of it looks like it's burnt and dead, they cut that part out.

It's weird that it was an instant onset type of thing, I guess when it strangulated it was instant and after 10 or so hours by the time I had surgery,  part of it had started to or successfully died.

Anyhow I'm back on the walk, walk, walk, sip, sip, sip for a week or two and trying not to let it put too much of a damper on my marathon training plans.  I'll just have to work harder when I can.

So make sure you take care of yourself and listen to your body, it might not always be the same old thing when you get that pain or discomfort.  The surgeon said that with any abd surgery and scar tissue, this is a possibility and to keep it in mind when things don't seem right.

Wow, that's scary.  Good thing you had the sense to go to the hospital!

Glad they got you all taken care of.  You'll be back to your old routine before you know it!

Dude, I know how you feel.  I had almost the exact same thing about a year ago.  To fix mine, they split me from breast bone to below my belly button.  That surgery was way worse than the original bypass.  The onset of pain was almost identical to yours, started off as a stomach ache and 2 hours later I was in fetal position on the floor, 2 hours after that I was breathing the happy gas in the ER.  I was told another hour, and I would have risked death!

I hit pretty hard depression after wards, not being able to exercise, having to basically start over eating, moving, running, biking.  Take care of yourself, let your family/friends help you through this.
Don't let it get you down.

Before  you know it you will be back in the swing of things.

GOOD LUCK!

Roy

That sounds really scary. Thank you for sharing your story, it shows me that I need to listen to my body and one day I might have a pain that will take more than just laying down sideways.

Oh Scott, I'm so sorry that you were one of the many to go thorough that awful experience. I am happy to hear that not only did you do the right thing by seeking help, but that you are home and recovering.

Thanks man. This post is exactly why I keep staying around these boards 6 years after surgery. Keeps these issues in the back of my mind a possibility. Glad you are doing alright. Take your time comming back.
