I am a mom, a wife and I am having WLS Aug. 30th. I am looking at my entire life and it all revolves around food. My family and I went out to eat last night, I ate meat and veggies at a mexican restaurant and  then we went home.  I kept thinking we need to go on a walk or something but all we did was go home and sit on the couch and watch TV. I am having a hard time with this. We are all so used to our sedentary lifestyle that I don't know how to change it. It is 105 degrees where I live and all the pools are closed because school has started.  I just would like to know others ideas on how they changed?

we turn the TV off.  play with the kids inside if it's too hot or just find something to do, we found an indoor playground we go to when it is really hot/raining/really cold, that keeps everybody busy.  you'll find when you go through a lifestyle change and embrace a healthy lifestyle, finding new things to do (and trying new things) quickly become one of the best side-effects of the experience.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

I have not been successful at changing my family at all. I have tried, mostly by inviting them to things I am doing or to come walk or run or bike with me. But they just aren't interested and are old enough that ordering them doesn't work.

I guess I have to hope that my good example will wear off on them eventually. I have done better at cutting their consumption of junk food but I control the food in the house because I do the grocery shopping.

I had a little success signing up for the family plan at the Y, then the kids got bored with that. How I don't know? Having an hour of Wii games got them moving too.

For starters, we've become much more of an outside family.  Things like hiking have become common - we lived in this area now for years, and never realized we have some of the most amazing hiking lands anywhere nearly next door!  My kids also wanted to be with Dad, so they started running in the races as well, and of course they had to train for that.  My very oldest kids 17 and 18 yo also are more than happy to hit the gym with me from time to time.

It takes some planning and focus to do it for sure, but you have to lead by example for sure, at least for me, that was the key.

I learned early on that I was the only one in my family that was having the surgery. My nutrition and exercise changed significantly. Along with my energy level. The surgery didn't help the rest of the family. I decided that I would lead by example and hope that I could engage them with good practices and examples, but I understand when they struggle.

Bicycling...As you drop the weight it becomes easier and easier.  If you don't feel comfortable to bike in certain areas, look at the local high school or college on the weekends.  Also look for bike paths.  You can go to Google Maps and click on traffic...then the more button.  Click on bicycling and you can see all the dedicated bike lanes in your area.  Yet as others have said...It started with walking...longer and farther each time...Basic but it works.
