Old Soldiers Day 5K (What this life is about)

So I typically don't write up 5K races but this past weeknds 5K was pretty special for me.  This is the one I had agreed to run with any Cub Scouts from our Pack that were intrested. Well the only kid intrested was my 9 year old son Anthony.  So he and I talked about what he wanted out of this race and I reassured him I would run with him, and help keep him on pace for whatever his goal was.  He decided he wanted to PR this race (like who doesn't want to PR right), his previous best was 35 and change on a hilly course, I figure it out and let him know if we can run an 11:00 pace he will get his PR.

So we get up early Saturday morning and hydrate a bit and then have a small breakfast, before heading out.  We arrive and get our numbers and I can tell Anthony is getting nervous because he isn't talking much.  We talk and agree that we are going to run the whole distance and try to avoid walking.

We line up about mid pack and when the race starts we instantly have to start weaving to pass people, next time we line up a bit closer to the front.  I have my garmin on and am using it to pace us, and giving him cues to slow down as he  started out running a 9 something pace which I know he won't be able to maintain.  As we run I encourage him everyt chance I can as I can see he is wanting to walk, but I know and he knew he could do this.  I count the miles down and continue to help him pace by slowing down and speeding up keeping close to the 11:00 min pace.  A few times we slowed down even more but he never slowed down to a walk.

We get to the last .1 mile and he sees the finish line and I tell him "Ok now run as hard as you can" He grabs my hand and we take off.  The people lining the way to the finish line start cheering him on and clapping for him.  We cross the finish line in 33min and change and he gets his PR.

We grab water and bananas and sit around resting waiting for the awards to start because I knew something he didn't.  They get to the awards for the 10 and under age group and announce "Anthony Corley Second Place".  He jumped up and ran up and ran back with his Medal and hugged me.  I knew going into this 5K it wasn't about me getting my PR but having some fun with my son and helping him do his best.  Well I think we accomplished that and learned again what having a second chance at life is all about.  Anthony has said a number of times how proud he is of me, but I doubt he could ever be as proud as I was at that moment.

After the awards we change into our Scout Uniforms and Walk 1.5 miles to the start of the parade route and then 1.6 miles to the end of the route.  What an awesome day.
