Sea Isle City 10-miler.
Definitely my last time doing this race. My recovery time just takes too much effort.
The race takes place at 5:45p on Saturday to make sure lo tide is in effect. It was still real humid but at least there wasn't the brutal sun. The race is three miles on the boardwalk and 7 miles of beach running. Last year I thought that my results were bad because of my hernia, but now I know that I'm just not built for beach running.
Started out the race by running do.wn the boardwalk and out to the beach (on the soft sand) at a decent clip, but as soon as I hit the ocean I started having trouble breathing and by mile 3 I was grasping for air. At the first turnaround I was already regretting participating and then I had almost 7-miles of in your face 15-mile per hour winds. It was 1 1/2 miles back to the boardwalk, and I somehow managed to hit the 5-mile mark at 48 minutes. Ran to the end of the boardwalk, and then trudged through the soft sand down to the beach and started after the second turnaround. At this point the winners were sprinting at me and heading to the finish line. Depressing... So I focused on the turnaround flag at the 7.5 mile mark. The water at all of the stations was lukewarm and was causing me extreme pain so I limited my intake and poured most of it on my head. At the turnaround I decided it was time to get back into the race, and started to pick up my pace. The last two miles I was able to run in 19-minutes. Crossed the finish line in 1:54.
I must have been real dehydrated because my legs were shot all day Sunday and Monday. They are just started to feel better this evening. I dropped eight pounds but I think that is mainly water weight and will come back to me by Wednesday. This race was actually harder with the wind and humidity than any of the marathons that I have done. Hope that I can get back in shape for this weekends duathlon.
