A Birthday & A TRIATHLON!!!! ***EDITED WITH PIC
I am an old man now! 36 years old... Ey Carumba!!! So, for my birthday this morning, I raced a litle Sprint down in Grand Prairie, TX. It was UBER windy, OF COURSE, but a gorgeous morning for a race. I really haven't raced since March and it felt good to get in the mix again. The course was a 500M Open Water Swim with serious chop coming at us the whole way, the bike was pretty long for a sprint at 19 miles with 2 loops, and the run was a simple out and back 5K.
There were around 100 racers, pretty light crowd really, but they did the race both Saturday & Sunday, which was cool, and it turned out the Saturday crowd, which was much bigger, got out of dodge before the real winds whipped up today! Anyways, I got transition set up, grabbed the goggles and PINK cap and headed down for a warm up swim.
I was in the first wave at 7:15 and there were about 30-35 folks along side of me. The swim was choppy, but managable, and was pretty much without incident. I was the 5th person out of the water in a little over 10 minutes. There was a pretty good run to get to transition from the water, T1 was about 1:30 and I headed out on the ride. I was VERY curious to see where my cycling fitness is at on the road since teaching spin, and ramping up my mileage. I have to say that today was a hammerfest for me on the bike, and the intense Spin Classes have proven to be a tremendous help! The same wind was whacking us from mostly a cross wind, but at times in your face and a couple times at your back. I averaged 22.5 mph on the bike and was 3rd off the bike for 19 miles in 50:36.
T2 was a little over a minute and I was out on the run. IMMEDIATELY when I started running, I could feel the impact that the allergies I have been suffering with would innevitably affect me. I tried to keep a quick pace, but it seemed like I was crawling and just did my best to hang on. about 4 or 5 people passed me on the run, which was to be expected, but my bricks I have been doing on the treadmill after spin, tell me that I am capable of a 22-23 minute 5K coming off the bike... Oh well, maybe next time.
All-in-all, I am EXTREMELY happy with my race today! No better way to spend my 36th birthday morning than racing. I wish my family could have been there... Total time was 1:30:26 which was good enough to sweep Clydesdale by 15 minutes and take 19th overall...
6 weeks until Ironman Louisville... BRING IT!!!

Happy Birthday! Sounds like a great race. Congrats on the timing and strong finish.
So if you're an old man at 36, I hate to think how ancient that makes me!

Happy belated birthday! Great job in the tri. I still don't understand the concept of the Clydesdale and Athena categoies in these races. Big difference between a 60-year old over 200 and a 20-year old. Since I don't qualify for that category (thank goodness) it doesn't really matter. it is just one of those universal thought provoking questions that I ponder when running.
