Treadmill at home - what/where/how

I'm just starting out. At this state the only cardio that works for me is the treadmill at physical therapy. I only have access to that twice a week, so I would like to have one at home. I know from past experience I will not drag myself over to the local gym as often as I need to exercise. I have looked at all the websites I can think of: Craigslist, sporting goods stores, Amazon, Overstock, Nextag, etc. Everything is so expensive, even the used stuff.

I need a treadmill that is at least 3 HP, and accommodates 400+ lb users. I am trying to keep the cost under $1,000.  Any ideas?

Walking outside sounds a lot cheaper :)

Just to throw it out there, have you considered an elliptical? Don't know about you but with all my extra weight, it was much easier on my knees and I find it more interesting/fun to do and more of a full body workout since you are working your arms too. I hate the treadmill, would rather walk outside. And I got mine for around $800.

Good luck.

I see you are still pre-op so KUDOS to you for wanting to start the exercise plan now when it is still so hard with the extra weight.  I wish I had done that.

You actually have a couple of options.  If you really want the equipment in your home, then check online with Play It Again Sports and see if there are any locations near you.  They resell used exercise equipment, a lot of it is gym quality from gyms that have closed or upgraded equipment.  3 years ago I bought a really nice eliptical from them and they delivered and set up.  It turned out to be a really expensive clothes hangar that was rehomed prior to surgeRy.  (One of many pre-op regrets I have)

But I would recommend investing money in a high quality pair of shoes and taking it outside and get to know your neighborhoods.  It's cheaper and just as effective and something you can do with your partner together while getting some fresh air daily.

Good LUCK!!!

I invested in a good running treadmill when I was pre-op and I still use it now but only when the weather wont let me run outdoors......I'm wih the ohers.....get some good running shoes (even if you are just walking) and take it outdoors....it does wonders for the body and soul.

Congrats to you for starting this positive change in your life now.  I started 6 months before surgery and it made my recovery soooo much better.

We are here if you need us!

I never used my home gym very often.. I am more motivated at the GYM or walking/running outside on a path.. In the beginning, I used to walk in the Mall or use the Lesie Sanson walking DVD. Save your money for your new wardrobe heading your way in the near future
