My first Bib...
Ok, so I get excited about the silliest of things.
Today was my first event. Evah! So, yes, I was excited to have my first bib. I completed the 4.4 mile Gate to Gate at Eglin AFB. This is an annual run that commemorates our freedoms and honors those who have worn a uniform in our Armed Forces. All participants were given flowers to lay on the All War Memorial as we went by.
I was very nervous, the 'fat-girl' voice inside started chattering last night and I could not shut her up. What was I thinking, signing up as a runner for a 4.4 mile event, I don't belong there, etc.... So it was with some trepedition that I showed up on base this morning. But I had set two goals for myself:
Goal 1: show up at the start line
Goal 2: finish by running across the finish line.
I am only mid-way through Week 4 of the Couch to 5k program and I was just going to use this as a training day. Start with a 5 min walk then start the run intervals and finish the race walking it out to the end. It was hard not to want to take off with the other runners instead of sticking to my training plan of starting with a brisk walk, But soon I was the last of the runners and I could hear the starting horn for the walkers. Crap, I'm about to get passed already. Finally, I got the go ahead for my first run interval and I got to do some passing of my own. After the run intervals and I started walking the rest of it, I realized that with 10 minutes after my last run, my HR had dropped way back and my legs felt good, so after passing the water station and hydrating, I reset my podcast and decided to do the intervals again. I was running when I crossed the finish line and felt such exhileration. Please don't tell me if it ever gets old having people yell and cheer for you, I want to always savor that.
Being part of the after-race party was so motivating and encouraging. No one looked at me as if I didn't belong, no one laughed at my time and I felt like I belonged there. Of course, the free 15 minute sports massage 30 minutes after the race didn't hurt either!
I enjoyed it so much that I signed up for another 5k for next week, but will still be in my training mode. I can't wait to actually get to say that I 'ran' a 5k! My time isn't anything to brag about but it was a PR for me and one that I can build on. Officially 4.4 miles in 1:03:08, 14:21 pace.
Thank you all for the motivation that I get from this Board every. single. day. I couldn't wait to come share my day with you all.
Oh yeah - the 'fat-girl' is now giving me the silent treatment!
I am Bib #396. My friend Nancy completed the race with me. Yes, this is post-race.

Great job!
Nope, the cheering hasn't gotten old for me - I go out of my way to encourage it by shouting to spectators, waving at them, and taping my name to my shirt.
Congrats on a great race for a wonderful cause, and here's to many more!!
