Tri 4 Life - Sprint Tri Race Report - Roswell Georgia
Crazy day. It was a bit shorter for most sprint Tri's (400 yard swim, 10 mile bike, and a 5K run) but the course was really, and surprisingly, hilly for both the bike and the run, a lot of small to medium steep inclines (out of the saddle inclines) it was like throwing out an anchor when you hit them. i was racing in the clydesdales division which is for guys 200+ pounds. . weather was almost perfect, didn't notice any extreme humidity or temp, the run course was predominantly shady as well. luckily it kicked off @ 7am because it became really steamy in the afternoon. Swim was a one-person-at-a-time time trial, which was really awesome. I felt very strong on the swim, this was my best swim yet for any tri i've done. I was able to keep a decent pace without my HR going haywire, a lot had to do with not having to stress with the wave start scrum i suppose, and my coach forcing me into the pool and swimming up tempo intervals. Transition1 (T1) was up a steep hill but i was able to go through it fast (for me), putting on socks still slows me down. The bike was really hilly like i said, i averaged only 19.2 MPH for the 10 miles and i was hammering it the whole way. The OA (overall) winner had an average of 23+ MPH, T2 was pretty fast for me as well. The run was good and i felt strong, but the hills definitely affected me. I was able to pace much better than the 5K race in FL and had fairly even splits with a slightly negative split for the last mile (but that could just be a symptom of the hills for that mile). My time was much higher on the run than i wanted, and i think there is definitely some room for improvement there. As i was approaching the chute, maybe 40 meters out, a 6'3" guy zoomed right by me. i thought: "crap" not again, that happened to me last summer when i missed first place clydes by 18 seconds. I picked up my pace to minimize the damage and finished maybe 15 seconds behind him. Turns out i had a better swim and bike than he did and he started before me in the time trial start, so i actually "touched him out", beat him by 20 seconds or so. his run time was in the 21's, mine was in the 24's. It's crazy that all i thought about all day was how i needed to up my game on the bike and run :) i ended up 33rd out of 202 overall and 1st of 17 in the clydes division.
