What are your thoughts on a 5k in May?

I posted on my facebook about a couple of 5k's coming up in late summer that I was considering doing.  Then a friend (who is about the same size as me) told me about a Weigh****chers sponsered 5k coming up on May 22.  It's called Walk-It, so I assume walking would be more than acceptable.  She invited me to walk with her in that one.  It makes my heart thump to just think about it, but I'm thinking about giving it a go.

I've been serious about exercising for several months now and go regularly to the gym for work on the treadmill and my round of weight machines.  I have only walked about 1.35 miles so far on the treadmill, but we also have a 30 minute time limit and I have to use part of that for a cool down.  When I started out, I was walking about 10 minutes at 1.5 miles an hour.  Now I'm up to about 28 minutes at 3 miles an hour.  Also, a couple weekends ago, our family hiked a moderately strenuous trail that was 1.8 miles.  That took about an hour, but we weren't rushing.

Do you think I'd be able to fini****  I'd hate to feel like a failure- especially because I know my whole extended family is going to be so excited for me and rooting for me.  Several of them have said they would do my first 5k with me.  I wonder if they will still say that since it's becoming closer to a reality!

GO FOR IT!

A WW sponsored walk will be super supportive and there will be people of ALL abilities.  And a friend to walk with?  perfect!!

If you can add some outside walking in addition to the time you spend on the treadmill, you will be more than ready!  Just take your time, and rest if you need to.

Go for it. My first "race" was a half marathon. The stated time to finish by was 3:15. I finished in 4:11. Walked the whole thing. Crossing that finish line was one of the proudest moments of my life (after I hit the bathroom LOL)! And got me addicted to doing more. You can do this, and with everyone to cheer you on, it will only be an inspiration to you.

go for it and try your best, all you can ask of yourself.  i agree, this sounds like a very walker friendly 5k (most are anyway).   just have fun and walk slower if you feel that you need to.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

You can fini**** I know you can, from personal experience.

I had surgery 11/17/09 (close the when you has surgery the year prior)
I did my first 5k on 5/22/10 I ran the whole thing in 31:08. I had ran my first mile without stopping on 3/10/10 and just worked my way up running further and further without stopping.

You will be energized and pumped up from being in an event with people all around you, the energy alone will bring you right to the finish line.

Thanks peeps! I think I'm going to do it! The nerves and excitement of that thought alone have me up at 5am on a Saturday. Might as well go walk!

Like everyone else I say go for it.  You can do it now it is up to you to prove to yourself you can.

One thing about this forum is that you won't ever find someone saying "No you shouldn't try it"

Good Luck and Have fun!

I am thinking about doing the WW 5K - I just did my first one last week, and it's amazing just to finish regardless of how you do.

The worse thing that could happen is you get addicted to them
