5/1/11--45 mile Omaha Health and Wellness bike ride report: The day started out waking up at 6 am, wondering what that noise was.  It was the wind outside. Wind is not what you want to hear at 6 in the morning before a bike ride, and knowing that the wind will pick up as the temps warms up.  Not to mention the temp was 40 degrees.
Anyways, get down to the building, get registered, get my bike ready, enough clothes on, and were off.  In town was not too bad, then the route followed the Missouri river for a while, not too bad, lots of trees and wind break, then about mile 10 we hit open country, and the wind.  The average speed went from 19 mph to 11 mph.  I spend the next 15 miles, mostly in the drops of the handle bars, trying to keep the head winds off my chest and on my back.  15 miles in the drops is really hard on your back and neck when you are not used to it.  I can do a mile or two at a time, but I am not used to that distance.  At the end of the ride my neck was really sore.  On the way back, we had the wind to our backs, made pretty good time, hitting 39 mph on one down hill, that was fun!  Total time in the saddle: 2 hrs 40 minutes.  Pretty good ride.
4/30/11--10k Race Report Today was my first official 10k race.  I was not worried about finishing, as I jog this distance 3 days per week.  But I really wanted to push myself and finish in 1 hour.  The morning was really cool, especially with the wind blowing off the lake.  It was a super flat course around a small lake in Council Bluffs IA.  When I arrived I was surprised to see a co-worker there I had been trying to get to go do it with me.  He had told me he was not going to come out, guess he changed his mind.  Anyways, got signed in, stretched and the gun sounded and we were off.  There is one in every race and this one did not disappoint.  One person took off like his ass was on fire, and from what I hear the short distance I saw him in front of me, was his warm up pace, about 2.5 miles into it he took off in full race pace.  He finished in 38 minutes!  Holy smoke shoes Batman!  It turns out he was 15 years old and his goal is to make the varsity track team.  Always one to make the rest of us look bad.  Not sure why, but I was able to keep a pace never held before for the first 4 miles, running by myself, but never out of sight of someone.  About mile 4 was able to pass some one, always feels good to be able to overtake someone.  Then at mile 5 came up on a couple guys passed one and the other was a younger kid, probably high schooler.  Tried about 5 different times to pass and he would always kick it up just enough I could not get around him.  I know how he feels, nobody likes to get passed, but dude, I am faster, let me go already!  So I paced him for about a 100 yards, drafted him, then with about 200 yards to go, smoked by him.  Co-worker Chris, said he tried to mount a pass the last few feet, but never got back around me.  My time was 55 minutes, 14 seconds (9.12 minute miles), nearly 5 minutes faster than I thought I could do and a pace I have never ran at any distance.  Pretty please with myself.

Sounds like an awesome weekend.

Head winds are the devil.  I'd rather be hill climbing than riding into a head wind.

Congrats on the running accomplishments.
