are you stretching a lot and using a foam roller?  if the x-rays came out clean, the "knee" pain might probably be IT band problems (the it gets pissed around the knee, although it runs up to your hip).  Try googling it band stretches and invest in a foam roller (I just bought a new fancy smancy one but they have a lot of cheap ones out there)

I will definitely try it. Thanks for the recommendation! I tried to ask my doctor if it were a possibility, and I got kaiser's default answer "nope, just lose weight, and it will get better".

I got my first foam roller last year at Target.  it was a big help with my IT band issues.  I just upgraded to a "fancy schmancy" one since it's just an overall good thing to have around if you are going to be doing a lot of walking/running.

You can even look up exercises on youtube!  My first one came with a DVD too.

I was going to ask about arthritis :(  I am able to get steroid shots which helps my knees immensely, wish  you could get them.  I had surgery in 2008 fora dislocating patella.  Knee pain is the worst!  Congrats on finishing your first 5k!
