Good morning all,
Well I finally accomplished my big goal after weight loss surgery, My goal was to finish the half marathon yesterday 4/17 and I did, in 3 hours and 20 minutes... not bad for my first time... probably is... this morning OUCH!   I have severe muscle pain/tightness and hip pain....I have been taking Advil, which I am not supposed to but that is usually what works for me,,, I do take Tums to help protect my pouch.... I have been trying to stretch my hamstrings and quads... My husband has been giving me soft massages which help but now he has gone to work and I am home all by myself....It hurts to walk.  I also have been experiencing lightheadedness and dizziness and even nausea... not sure because of the pain or what.... I know I did not drink very much yesterday for the run... I have been trying to this morning and even drinking some Propel to see if that helps me.  Does anyone have any suggestions in what I can do for this awful pain. Thank you for any info!!!!

It's probably too late for an ice bath but that would have helped. You may not want to hear my next suggestion, but I'd go for a run. Perhaps a couple miles to get things loosened up and moving again.

I wouldn't take Advil even if you didn't have RnY. It's going to diminish some of the fitness gains you would get from running the HM.

But you can still use ice and rest and elevation even at this point. The other thing I do si foam roll.

First off, Congrats on the huge accomplishment. I agree with all the suggestions above. I have heard this problem arising often. Part of training is a two-fold purpose. 1) Increase Cardiovascular endurance and 2) To train your body (muscles / joints / bones / tendons) and also your your metabolism (Specifically nutrition) to withstand the pounding on the body for the distance you are racing. Many times, this type of severe pain and agony after a race could possibly be a result of undertraining  or not being fully prepared to run for the 13.1 mile distance. Either way, YOU DID IT! Now, you know what it feels like to accomplish this huge goal, the next step is to continually train and increase your BASE mileage so you are more fully prepared to attack the course and not just survive :)  I highly recommend also, getting out for a little run to loosen up the joints and muscles. I also recommend upping your protein to aid in the recovery of your damaged muscles. Recover well and train smart.
