Spin Class. Can I just get up and leave?
I just signed up for a gym membership and my surgery(RNY) is less then 2 weeks away, on the 25th. I keep looking at the Spin class and I THINK I want to try it, but too chicken. Last time I belonged to a gym was 13 yrs ago and have done zero exercise since. Im currently at 233 and starting my 10 day liquid diet this Friday, on the 15th. I want to try the spin class(as well as other classes), but keep thinking im too big for them? Can you just get up and leave the class if its too much and you just cant take it?
Sign in and get there early, if it's anything like 24 hour fitness~ grab a bike in the back row nearest the exit. They usually turn off the lights and have loud music playing, so I don't think if you really need to leave it would be a problem...
It's pretty intense, and it may not be the # 1 choice if you haven't exercised for 13 years thou.. you prob won't be able to continue it right after surgery while you heal..... just a thought, but you can always do it at your own pace, and the class does give motivation. I restarted with walking after surgery and am building back up.
.... ask your Doctor. Do what feels right for you.

I've also been interested in the spin classes but too scared to do it due to my weight and current fitness level.
I'm hoping that after surgery, I'll be able to power through one of those classes with no problems!

I have just started doing Spin Classes (Thank Bill!) I feared them and avoided them like the plague. Since I had some guidance to the best Spin Class for my level made it a bit easier, so I would suggest you talk to someone at the gym and find the right class. While they are a workout and Stairs are fun afterwards I find it to be a rather enjoyable class, but again I know what some of the other classes are like at my gym and am probably in the right one for me.
Last thing you want to do is get in a class designed for experienced people doing mad sprints and intervals. I was told in that spin class is very individual and allows for you to do it at your pace, which I have found to be true again probably because the class I am in.
So again talk with the people working at the gym and find the right class that way you won't be turned off.

One cool thing about the spin classes is that you can dial in any resistance level you want and no one else can tell. So you can completely customize the workout to your fitness level.

I go to the gym everyday now, but if you are pre-sugery and out of shape, I would not recomend that particular class to start off with. Especially if you are starting a liquid diet before surgery. I take that class now and then just for fun, but every instructor has been a spin natzi. It won't be fun for you until you are in a bit better shape.
Just prep for the surgery and do the best you can with the liqud diet. It's going to be hard enough without adding hard core cardio. Start off with walking as much as you can or riding a stationary bike at the gym and progress from there after your surgery. You won't believe how fast you can get in shape after.
Good luck and God bless!

absolutely. it doesn't hurt to show up early and chat with the instructor, explain that it's your first time and may have to leave early if you can't handle it. they are there to help you, so very few (unless the instructor is a total jerk) will give a beginner a hard time. like paul and marie posted, you are in control of the resistance, and you are in control of your intensity. start off slow and enjoy yourself, dial it up when and if you become comfortable.
Where are we going?? And why am I in this handbasket??
right now. somewhere. somebody is working harder than you.
