Weakness and Exhaustion After Work Out
I am mostly a exercise novice... Recently ramped up my post surgery (2mos ago) walking/hiking to include low impact aerobics (Jazzercise) - Going 2-3 times a week. Typically the classes I attend are in the early evening but Saturday I went to a 8:30am class which was a 75 minute supersession.
Woke up at 7:45 so I had to rush to get to glass. Had some water (8-10oz maybe) before class. I worked hard and sweat like a maniac - drank about 1/2 of a 16oz bottle of water during class. After class I was shakey, which I figured was due to the need for more water and some food. But then shaky turned to full on exhaustion. I spent most of the day in the recliner so tired I didn't want to drink or eat - I was also very chilled. Literally I just wanted to lay there feeling spent. It too****il nearly 5pm until I had myself together.
Anyone experience this? Any idea what it was? Assuming I needed better prep as in more liquids, some food etc. I have a 5K on Saturday (walking) and I know I will push myself but I am afraid I will fall apart like this again.

You are correct in that you need to properly fuel your exercise. You don't have to eat much but a little something to get you through your workout. Also as the duration and intensity of your workouts change you will need to change your hydration and nutrition strategy. Again nothing big but small changes can make a huge difference.
Example was my run yesterday. I had not planned on running yesterday and therefore and not fueled for a run, for me that means some carbs. I hit the trail and bonked out 2 miles into my run, since it was an out and back run I pushed myself another .25 miles and was bummed it would leave me shy of my planned 5. The this morning I ate my typical preworkout breakfast and did a 10 mile spin followed by a 2.1 mile dreadmill run and had no issues with fueling or hydration.
You are doing an awesome job! see you at the 5K!

Like everything it is a learning process and we need to find what works for each of us. This is a lesson that I am sure many of us have learned and are sometimes reminded of.

OMG...I had the same thing happen to me this weekend. I got up Saturday morning to go to the gym and didn't eat or drink anything. I drank maybe 4-6 ounces on the way to the gym and was sipping during my workout. When I got to my parent's house I made a Protein shake but hadn't started drinking it yet. When I got out of the shower, I was in my room and I almost blacked out. I was so weak...I couldn't move. The only thing I kept thinking is I can't call out for help...I'M NAKED!! lol
It took about an hour for me not to feel completely weak. I finished my protein shake and started feeling better.
Sunday I got up to go to the gym but I drank about 8 oz of crystal lite and then 10 oz of tea. I sipped during the workout and started drinking my protein shake on the way home from the gym...I mixed it in the car. No ill effects!!
I chalk my bad experience up to not hydrating and no protein.

You definitely need to eat/drink before 75 minutes of exercise. Dan's post this morning is a good article about the need for proper nutrition - check it out, I found it very helpful and informative.

It's good to know the signs of dehydration. Dehydration is the # 1 reason post WLS people reenter the hospital...Lets be careful out there.
Symptoms of Dehydration in Adults
The signs and symptoms of dehydration range from minor to severe.
- Increased thirst
- Dry mouth and swollen tongue
- Weakness
- Dizziness
- Palpitations (feeling that the heart is jumping or pounding)
- Confusion
