What is this about ibuprofin interfering with fitness gains?  I've never heard this before.  What happens if you take it?  I have been taking one ibuprofin about an hour and a half before I run to help the pain in my ankles.

When you workout, your muscles get torn down. The process of repairing them is what gives you your fitness gains. When you take NSAIDs (and Acetaminophin), the inflammation in your muscles is reduced so there is less to repair. Which means less fitness gains.

Now that may not be 100% scientifically accurate but it's my "closest to it" layman explanation.

Oh.......No, no, no. I don't do any NSAIDS... I have a standing prescription for 3 types of muscle relaxers... (Skelaxin, Flexeril and Amerix) and all work well. In fact I only really need around 1/2

I also have a TENS unit and use Ben Gay or other NON-NSAID rub. There was a person from our WLS group (an RNY'er) who was 4 years post op...She only used the OTC Ibuprofin maybe 3 times a year? This last time she used Motrin for two days in a row (just 3 tablets in all) and ended up in the ER with blood pouring from her mouth and rectum....Perferated bleeding ulcer.... it can happen that fast and it can be deadly.

No NSAIDS for me, ever, ever, again...And I LIVED on them pre-op.

Also, if you need something "strong" ask your doctor about Tramadol or Nucynta...Both are NON-Opiods but work as good as NSAIDS without the dangers for us RNY'ers...

Beyond that...Good old fashioned heating pads, massages, warm baths or hot showers all can help relax the simple pains of pulled or torn muscles, sprains, strains, etc. (and I'm nearly 50 so I have quite a few.)

Good luck.
Warmly,
Jackie

Great info.  I'm glad I asked.  I have my 18 month check up on Friday with my surgeon so I will ask him about other pain killers.  Thanks for your help!
