Sunday's Half Marathon.......
I ran in the Angie's Half Crazy race yesterday - my third half marathon race.
By my own timing, I pulled a 3hr 20min finish. That's 4min more than my first race last year. I do know that I have improved and that I made a really simple mistake that jacked up my chances to beat my 3hr goal.
What is that, you say? HYDRATION!!!!! The day before a race, I usually get in 100 -120oz of water. I MAYBE did 32oz and I paid dearly for it. I did 12miles in 3 hrs and my general pace for one mile is 12min30sec. So - you can clearly see that last mile was like a stroll thru death valley. LOL
Also changed from my previous races is my energy level - I have a bad habit of going too fast in the beginning which blows out my energy and muscles and I finish with 'lead legs'. I managed that really well yesterday, though. I know if I had just done the water, I would have done better.
So - time to continue training!!! I'm going to do a few more 10Ks and a 5K for speed here and there. There's a 10miler in Oct that I'm going to do but if I can find another half marathon in July or so - I'll definitely sign up.
Ok - enough of my babbling - thanks for listening!!!

Death march - good one! LOL I posted on my Facebook page 'I now understand why marathon and half marthon races are scheduled on Sunday mornings, often times. It's so that even if you are not a regular church goer - you will still spend time talking to Jesus on at least THAT Sunday morning'
LOL!!!
My nutrition was solid - I wake up about 2.5 hrs before race time and get in a protein shake and 20oz of water. I have a carb loading supplement powder I mix with Powerade Zero in a 22oz I have with me during the race. I hit plain water at the water stations during and at about mile 6, I hit the power beans or a small cliff bar.
When I hit the water stations toward the end, even though I was slinging back as much as I could - it wasn't enough - and I literally could tell that was the issue - after the station, about 2min after - I felt BETTER and could pick up for a clip - just not enough to really carry me through. And my calf muscles started seizing up, something they never do UNLESS I am deyhdated and low on potassium.
It was such a simple misstep on my part I am truly pissed with myself - but I know I will get it right for the next race.
