Couch to 5k or not?

Ok, I really want to pick up jogging/running. I soon move and the weather there will be great for outdoor jogging/running. I recently picked up using the treadmill. I have always been scared I will break it. I still feel like that but I trying to get over it .

I have started jogging/running. I do about 6.0-6.5 for around 5 minutes. However I will like to up this time. I was looking at the couch to 5k and the starting seems like it will be a waste of time to me- however I am thinking of adjusting it to fit me. Is this a good idea or should I just go by the program? Or does anyone know of anymore advanced/starter programs?

Thank you

You can jump into a harder week but it depends on what you are doing. If you only do 5 min. of running per session, you may find the week where you run 5 min several times harder than you expect.

I started at the beginning and only did the easier weeks 2x before moving up, but I also did the harder weeks 4x when I had to.

Thank you for the reply. I would do 5mins - brisk walk for 2 minutes - then start back. Usually repeated this like 4 times

Sounds like week 4 would be a good place to start then.

Or start at Week 1 but work on running faster than you have been for the shorter intervals.

I started running last year - never used a program though.  I am now focused on running for distance over speed - but I do speed interval training.

On the treadmill, I'm usually at 4.8-5.4 for 3-4miles at a time.  My longer runs are on the weekend.

Never seen the couch to 5K thing - but on runner's world website and a few others, there are training ideas, tips and schedules.

Good luck to you - enjoy!  I've come to really enjoy it.

I never did the C25K either but sort of did the same thing. I started on the treadmill and simply increased my speed to about 6.5-7 and then I just increased the time every time I ran. When I got to 3.1 miles I started thinking about the marathon and started following a training program for that.

I just completed the C25K and ran my first 5K race last weekend. I found it a great program, but I really was a Couch Potato in that I was never a runner. Given your experience, I think you'd find it useful, but go ahead and start on a later week. You'll be ready for running 3.1 miles in no time.

c25K is the first and only way I ever really got running, after trying soooo many times before.  I loved it, and with very specific goals each time it really helps you progress properly.  I think I jumped in at week 3 or 4 .... which was pretty much what I'd already been doing for a whole month without being able to get any better than that, or knowing how to try.   TOTALLY works.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I can't wait to incorporate this program into my workout schedule. I want to run a marathon sometime in the future hopefully this helps.I am going to do one session of week three and then continue on to four. This plus training should do me fine.
