Introducing myself

 Hi All..

My name is Frances and I had RNY on 12/7/2009.  2-3 years prior to my surgery I was actually an avid cyclist (albeit, an obese one) and thoroughly enjoy long-distance cycling.  Due to life cir****tances changing I haven't been able to ride much in the past couple of years, but am looking forward to trying to fit cycling back into my routine come Spring/Summer.

I've pretty much been stalled in my weight loss efforts for the past five months and I'm at the point where I'm just sick of worrying about it all the time.  I know if I become more active and strive towards races/events that I will naturally become a fitter person.  I'm relatively competitive in my career, and I think this will transitione easily to becoming more athletic.

I participated in my first 5K last Sunday and while I didn't really get the chance to train, nor did I plan on running it since my 10 year old also asked to walk it with me, it was a good experience all the same.  I've got two goals right now event-wise.  There is a race in July in my little small town that I think may be a little longer than a 5K, and then I also want to do the Copperman Triathlon here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on August 6th.  I'm not a swimmer, so that training is a little intimidating, but I'll be putting that off until it warms up here since I will have to train in lakes (there really isn't a pool close by).  I've restarted the C25K program and will be alternating that with some Spinervals DVD's with my road bike that's on the trainer now.

I'm looking forward to becoming active on this forum too, since I really want to just focus on being fit and athletic and stop obsessing about my weight.

Welcome surgerysis! Didn't realize you never posted here before. This is my FAVORITE forum! I spend more time here than the rny now. The people here rock and are SO supportive. Loved the pic of your son after the race Sunday. Great job on it. Maybe I should try a tri too, but I've got my half in July to get through.

Glad you are here!

He was so discouraged half way through and I just kept talking positive to him.  Then his aunt & uncle gave him $5 for completing his first 5K.. it was so great :).  I hope he keeps it up.  I did my first C25K workout again last night.. I think I maybe should have taken a day off though.  The inner part of my left knee hurts some and so does those connector ligament things (no clue what they're called) in my inner thighs up to my groin area.  I have to do grocery shopping today, but I think I'll be on the bike tonight.. if not one of the videos just spin for a good 20-25 minutes to get back into it.

How great for him.  I bet he was so thrilled!

Take it easy on the workouts.  I did a thread earlier (scroll down) where I was trying to figure out my workouts (after you and I planned it out that night).  I got a lot of good advice plus the importance of rest days.  You should read through it.  I didn't realize the importance of letting our bodies heal.

Maybe this summer I'll buy a bike and think about a tri.  Good for you for actually signing up.  I'm so proud of you!

I've started C25K again, but am picking it up more than the program.  I've been doing interval training, will do one tonight.  I jog as long as I can (Sat. was .45 mile), then pretty much to .25 mile walk/jog for the rest of the way, trying to extend each jogging set if I can.  I hope to jog at least a half mile without stopping tonight.

Welcome! Looks like you are already on the right track. Triathlons are a blast, my favorite events! Glad to see your lack of having a nearby pool isn't stopping you. We do the best we can with what we got. I live in a dangerous town, so when I ride my bike or run I have to carry a loaded pistol. It sucks, but its life so I deal with it and keep going.

Yup, a compact Taurus ACP .380 with a 6 round clip with hallow points. When I go out I not only carry my ID on me, I also have to carry my concealed weapons permit. I am so used to it I guess I just don't find it strange anymore. Its just part of my life here. I need to take pics for you guys. My husband is trying to get us out of here, but the Army doesn't want to let us move :(

Saturday I took the hour drive to Savannah to ride. I was able to leave it in the car,it was a good feeling. The roads were safe, and I saw 10 or so other riders on the road, something I haven't seen since I started riding. I plan on taking the hour drive up there on the weekends to ride. I am doing a metric century in Screven on Saturday, its an hour drive the opposite way, I have never been there, but the event website said its a ride through farmland.
