Question for the Swimmers Out There

Hello all,

I started back at my gym today and took a swim. I have been away for several months, and it was pretty hard for me. I was stopping to catch my breath a lot and ended up only doing just under half a mile before I called it quits for day one.

I don't really know what I'm doing out there. I basically do a front crawl and occasionally throw in a back stroke. Several months ago when I was swimming for exercise, I would do intervals of 5 laps with 3 laps front crawl and 2 back stroke, but never paid much attention to changing up my speeds and I'd do about 35 laps to get a mile in. I never used kick boards, but they are available.

Can any swimmers out there recommend a good routine for an out of shape beginner like me? When I work my way back up to the mile, what is a decent time to shoot for? Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Lindsey

I'm self taught myself (starting about 3 months ago, I had never swam a lap in my life), so I am no expert :)  I use this site a whole lot http://www.swimsmooth.com/

I am now up to a little over a mile in my long swims, and I do a mile in about 52 minutes.  I guess its a bit slow, but I don't really know either.  I know it will get me under the cuttoff at the HIM.  I tried doing some of the drills, but to be honest, I feel like I should just swim, and try to swim faster as my drill.  I usually do an interval type workout, a semi-long swim, and then a really long swim every week.  I mix in a lap or two of breast and back stroke here and there, but mostly I focus on freestyle.

Thanks, Andrew! I guess I will just work my way back up to the mile.

I'll check out that website you mentioned as well!
