Gym Etiquette

Holy Cow am I Crabby today.

Went to the gym in our apartment per usual this morning 5:15,  At 5:30 a trainer walks in with his two giggling girl clients and proceeds to blast R&B, Hip Hop and Pop Sh#! on his boom box.  I'm trying to listen to a book on tape while on the recumbent bike and I had to turn my volume up to hear it.

Music that I don't like invades my personal space.  I don't think the trainer lives in our apartment complex, but his clients do.  I don't want to confront him (I'm passive aggressive).  How can I give him the message that  I HATE MUSIC in the morning.

Oh, and then there are those folks who turn on the TV real loud.  And each person comes in turns on their TV even louder.  The TVs are set to close captioning.  Why the volume at all?  What ever happened to listening to your breath, contemplating your stride, checking into your pace?

Makes me want to stay home.  CRABBY, Crabby, crabby.  (Lucy kick)

I think for the most part people can be pretty clueless to their behavior.  Yesterday I went to a Leg press and had to unload 6 45lb plates so I could use it.  In the free weight areas we have guys that do dumbless to the point that they can't set them down but rather drop or toss them down.  you can hear and feel it in the floor on the otherside of the gym.

Noise I can tolerate as I just turn my headphones up louder. Rudeness is hard to avoid in todays society.

Is it possible for you to talk to his clients (the two giggling girls) instead. They are the ones paying him. Maybe if they knew they were bothering others, they would be more respective.

Well my gym has it set so in order to hear the TVs at all you have to put in ear phones.  But as far as close caption...I can't read when I'm moving on the treadmill (or in a car, train or anything moving) Because I get motion sickness.

The loud music that would bother me a lot!!!

It seems that Gym Etiquette is right there with "Common Courtesy" which unfortunately is NOT that common any more...SAD.

I use an iphone with ear buds, so I can listen to what I want to listen to.  If you are not a music person, find a nice soothing wave or natural sound and set it to repeat.  Also, audio books are great.  Prior to our first trip to Italy, I learned Italian while i was walking/running... I'm sure my neighbors thought I was crazier than before as I run down the street repeating Italian sentences LOL.

I am also a stong proponent of Open, Honest, Direct, and Respectful communication.  Pick up reasonably heavy free weight and walk up to the trainer.  Politely ask the him to be considerate of others and turn down the music.  If that doesn't work, accidently let the weight slip and drop it on his toes....ok, ok, just kidding, but three out of four ain't bad...it's 75%...in baseball you'd be an allstar!  : )
Eating junk food and CRAP is not a reward...it's a punishment...
it's a DEATH sentence...Reward yourself with Good Health!

"How can I give him the message that  I HATE MUSIC in the morning."

Simply tell him.  You were there first.  Ask him to please turn the music down or he can request with property manager to reserve the room for his client training.  If he does not comply, simply file a complaint with the property manager.  Chances are he doesn't have the permission to be there anyway.

I'm sorry but if you don't speak up for yourself, no one is going to do it for you and then you will have to decide to alter your routine or live with it.
