I am still considered a newbie but in my opinion to be successful long term with RnY really takes a commitment to lifestle change. Sure for the most part the weight will come off, but once it is gone and the malabsorbtion wears off then it is up to you to keep it off.

During your first 12-18 months while the surgery is in full affect is your time to change your lifestyle.  Yes exercise sucks when you are heavy but it becomes more enjoyable when you are not as heavy.  Healthy eating following the rules and exercise will heal you obtain your goals.  I believe that success or failure is up to the individual.

what paul said, without a lifestyle change it will be difficult to succeed.  it all starts in the hospital, listen to your dr.'s and nurses and get up and walk when they tell you and walk everyday when you get home (follow dr.'s orders of course, mine had me walk 30 min every day for the first 2 weeks and then increase if i felt up to it).  post here often and best of luck!
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

Laurie,
Congratulations for your commitment to a lifestyle change!!  Remember RNY is just a tool to use.  Make good use of it.  Follow your doc's advice and incorporating exercise is key!

Good luck!

Keep us up to date.

Also the loose skin etc... after wards is there any kind of exercise or something to help shape it up without having surgery?

Thanks in advanced

RnY is an abbreviation it is just one of the many surgery forms.

There are
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy
Duodenal Switch
Laproscopic banding
Roux-en-Y
Vertical Banded Gastroplasty

There are variations of all of these depending on what form it takes, how much altering they do etc.
You can find a message board here for each of the different types of surgery.
