I just got my Garmin and love it.  I liked gamin because of the built in GPS functionality along with various other features.

i haven't really found one that has worked well for me, so i've mostly gone off of percieved exertion lately.  i wish i could find one that works well for me, but i'm ok with how i'm proceeding without it.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

I'm another one that uses the HR monitor with my Garmin.  Works good for me.

I don't train with HR but I do have a HRM. I have the Garmin 310XT because it's multi-sport so I can use it for everything I do.

Whatever you do, make sure you get on with a chest strap. The ones where you put your finger on the watch to take a pulse are very inaccurate.

I have a polar FT-7 which I like pretty well.  CR said Timex & Omron make pretty good ones.

Next one I buy I'll make sure has a "fit-test" function.  My RHR is so low now that I'm not sure I'm getting accurate information from my monitor.
