Questions about training for my Tri

OK so yesterday I did a brick a small one but learned why it is called a brick.  Today I did 11 miles on the cycle to prove to myself that I could infact actually pedal for at least 10 miles.  I know being on the road is going to be completely different and have been looking at road bikes.  As I am getting ready for this I have a few questions.

1) Bike would a good Hybrid bike be ok?  I have planned on getting into riding but at this point sinking money into a bike that is strictly asphalt has me worried.  I would like to ride with my kids and this would be done on dirt roads and such not hardcore trail riding.

2) Swimming gear.  I figure standard swimming trunks aren't the best idea as they will cause drag. So I am thinking a pair of the tight thigh length ones with a compression shirt, to hold in the jiggly pieces.

3) Hydration I can do my 5K without stopping for a drink but I know doing this is going to be a lot more on my system.  How often should I drink and what should I be drinking?  Do I need to worry about some type of recovery fluid?  How do you all judge this?  I know in running at about mile 4 I am dripping wet with sweat and about mile5 on the cycle I was dripping sweat pretty good.  At what time or distance do you start looking at things like GU or electrolyte replacements?

4)  How frequently should I do the brick?  Should I do the full 10 miles and then 5K or train with shorter distances to just get the feel of it.

I am sure I will have many more as time ticks by.

Thanks!

hee hee hee...brick is indeed a great name for that workout, isn't it?

I did my first (and only, so far) Tri with a Hybrid.  It is a little slower but I chose a hybrid for the same reasons you are considering one.  It's totally doable but it will come down to personal choice.

Swimming gear - depending on where and when the tri is, you might think about a wet suit (I'm from Canada, lakes/rivers are cold here for many months of the year) can't see your location while replying....

Hydration often comes down to personal needs.  I needed to experiement and now that I've lost a lot of the weight I imagine that my nees are quite different.  When I run, I try to sip sip quite often from my camel back.

My nutrionist has suggested that for activity longer than an hour, that I take on some carbohydrates during exercise.  I'm trying to find the exact numbers of grams she suggested, when I do, I will forward that to you.  On the bike is the easiest time to injest things for me  Again, you will have to experiement to see what you can tolerate as GU and some others are quite sweet.  I suck on Cliff Shot Blocks (giant gummy candies) and can tolerate those, as well as Cytomax.  GU, Gatorade and Carb-Boom are too sweet for me.

sorry, I;m not feeling very qualified to giving you training plan advice, but our local triathalon club has some workouts on their site that might be helpful

I use these tri shorts from 2xu for swimming and even running sometimes.  They have a light padding on the butt as well for riding, not like full fledged bike shorts, but enough to take the edge off (literally).  Kind of holds me together and I kind of grown fond of doing everything in them . They've held up ok in the chlorine pool as well so far.  I might look silly, but I'm comfy.

we need to hook up at the gym to go over details, but here is my advice (when/where is the tri?)

swim gear, this is GA, i haven't seen a wetsuit legal race yet, so i don't own one.  i use a pair of tri shorts i bought at the bike shop (i think performance bikes in roswell had one), i also swim in a compression top (tank top for me) and underwear by underarmor.  during the transition from the swim, put on moisture wicking socks (any sporting goods store will have them like dick's) and your sneakers or biking shoes depnding on what you have, you can then throw on your running top with your race bib pinned on it, or a race belt with the bib if you have one of those.  for the bike, a hybrid is fine, you just won't be as fast or efficient, i've seen a lot of people use them for their first tri's.  the bike is the best time to hydrate or take in nutrition on the move.  i would experiment with gels during training.  also during transition is a good time to take in some water if you are nervous about drinking on the move.  you know how to run, and i would definitely keep doing the brick workout at least once a week, and as the event gets closer it would be good to get at least one in that is the full race distance.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

The tri is in Roswell on May 22nd.

Right now nerves are just getting the best of me along with my need to do everything the best I can.  I have no doubt that if I start the thing that I will fini****  This is event has a very close meaning to me and I have family comming in now to cheer me on, so I am putting even more pressure on myself.

This is something that 3 weeks ago I never pictured myself doing and feel so totally unprepared.  But deep down I know I can do it.

Thanks to everyone for their advice and support.

no problem.   you are probably not going to win the event so no need to put any undue pressure on yourself!  :)  i would consider doing the Lifetime indoor try at our gym, it's on 4/10 i think and it would fit in nicely with your training.  i haven't done one of the indoor ones yet, but i'm going to do this one.   it is what i call a reverse tri, instead of time you are going for distance.  there is a 10 minute swim, 30 min on the stationary bike, and 20 minutes on the treadmill.  and a no pressure transition (i think you have 10 minutes from swim to bike and 5 minutes from bike to run).  this would be a nice and easy way to get a feel for a tri.

send me the link for the one in roswell, i would like to do an early season tri if it fits into my calendar.

Oh I never go into anything expecting to be a winner, well except surgery.

I read over the indoor try and oddly enough had considered it.  So Done Deal I will register tomorrow.

here is the link for the Tri.
