Disney question
Has anyone done the Disney World Marathon weekend and NOT stayed in the park? I've got a timeshare I can use...but from what Bill wrote, it seems that might be the worst idea ever... wondering if anyone else has done this from a non-Disney property.

hopefully somebody else has done it and can give you advice. but i'm sure it will be fine, just like any other really big race, just depends on how early you have to get up to make sure you're not stuck in traffic when they fire the gun :)
Where are we going?? And why am I in this handbasket??
right now. somewhere. somebody is working harder than you.

I stayed at the park when I ran the marathon. Used all the park transportation. If you are using your own transportation be prepared for long lines and jams very early in the morning. I think things start backing up around 3:30a or 4:00am. I think Cassie or Scott may have stayed out of the park one year.

Sue,
I stayed onsite when I did Disney. From what I've read, you just need to plan to be at Epcot by 4 a.m. race morning, allowing for 45 minutes to an hour for that last mile into the park. So give yourself plenty of time from the timeshare.
I've known some people who'll book one of the cheaper Disney hotels for just race night and stay off-site the rest of their trip. Sometimes you can get some pretty decent deals onsite. Subscribe to the mousavers.com newsletter for the latest discounts.

I had to drive from our resort once because they would not let my dad and wife on the bus. They had the morning before. Luckily we had a car but were starting later than I was comfortable with.
We did get caught in traffic but Disney is wonderful at moving masses of people. In a few minutes we were parked. With something like race morning, 15 minutes can make a big difference. If you are on Disney property at 3:30, you probably will not wait for more than a few minutes. If you are there at 3:45, you might wait a half hour. I would not be really concerned about being not getting there unless you are really late.
There are a few pros with driving. If the weather is not ideal, you can stay in the car until about 5am as there is about a 20 minute walk to the start. If you do get there really early, you can catch a few extra minutes. Not that you really will because you are so excited for the race but the thought is there. Not that it's tough to check a bag but you can keep it in the car with dry clothes.
Overall, I would recommend driving. Just go early and you will have nothing to worry about. That being said, there is a magical, quiet excitement on the bus.

as a matter of fact, I was just looking at renting a house in Lake Buena Vista this afternoon for marathon weekend next year. If looks like I will be driving next year but probably would have either way.
