There's all sorts of plans you can find online. Lots of people have had success with the Couch to 5K program. www.c25k.com It starts you off slowly.

Don't get discouraged at first. You WILL get better with time and there's no reason why you can't do the same week of C25K over and over again until you feel you can graduate to the next level. Remember you're training 3 things, your lungs, your heart and your legs.

Good luck!

One thing I know is to make sure you get good running shoes. I started running last year in regular tennis shoes and kept getting bad shin splints and sores around my knees and ankles. My buddy convinced me to buy some good running shoes and it made a huge difference in reducing soreness in the joints in my legs.

Get an ipod with a play list of motivating music, like Rocky theme song, dance remixes and other fast paced songs. I could never run, then my friend *****gularly participates in triathalons told me that's how he kept moving when he was running alone. It works!! Also, make sure to up your protein! You will be using more to repair your muscles and this will help prevent DOMS. I do a profect before bed and that seems to help too.

Thank you all for this great information,  I started out yesterday and didn't do to bad even when I thought heart and lungs were going to explode.   I am sure it will get better the more I do it.

Again thanks.  Annmarie

I used couch 2 5K starting in March.  I wasn't quite a couch potato because I was walking 5 miles in about 90 minutes.  But I followed the program and got to 5K distance in about 11 weeks.  I have yet to get the 5K in under 30 minutes, but it's not for lack of trying.  I ran 9 5Ks between July and December, and I"m starting a cross country series on Sunday which will culminate in a 10K on February 20.

I lvoe the c25k, and there is a pod cast on itunes that will do the counting for you.

Be of good cheer.  I'm about to turn 51 and ran for the first time at age 50.  I'm still aobut 27 pounds higher than I want to be, but new year, new me.  I'm gonna get these last few off.  So, I say all of this to encourage you.  I really fell in love with running for a lto of reasons, but saying, "I'm a runner" sounds so good to these formerly fat ears.  Better than I'm an "ellipticaler."

Great post, I was wanting to ask the same question. Feeling like I am getting small enough to try to do a 5k.
Also, what does one look for in a good running shoe?

Thanks!

Happy New Year!
