Scuba Diving

I am considering having WLS.  Before regaining my 100lbs this time, I had been a very active scuba diver.  I am wondering if there are any divers here, and if the surgery affected your ability to dive (aside from better fitting into a wetsuit!)?

I don't scuba, but I sink like a rock now.
I find that the wetsuit makes a big difference now for my ability to swim.  It's almost a must have for me.

That is so true!  As I have gained weight, I found it almost impossible to get to the bottom of an 8ft deep pool.  The same pool in which I could laze around at the bottom when I was much thinner.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you need to increase the weight on your belt

I lost 50lbs.. went diving and had to remove some weight.. Iv'e since put it back on.

I used to be an avid scuba diver until it became to much of an effort to pick up a weight belt.  From my experience post-op and remembering my diving days it will probably be a more enjoyable experience.

My heart rate and respitory rate has slowed won quite a bit since losing the bulk of my weight.  This would mean that I would probably get more bottom time per tank. Obviously the loss of fat will effect your bouancy and the need for as much weight.  I used to require over 30 pounds of weight now I could probably manage around 25.  With proper exercise you will become more flexible as the amount of mass that is required to move is less.

I have to sons and have told my wife that when they are old enough we will be taking it up.  She might even enjoy it.

I absolutely loved diving when I was in better shape.  Now I'd probably use a whole tank of air just to get to 60ft.  I guess I am wondering if this surgery has any affect on nitrogen absorbtion.  I had DCS a couple years ago and I dont want to go through that again.  Not that DCS kept me out of the water!  But its always great to hear other's experience and I hope that WLS won't keep me from diving, and that, like you said, the weight loss will surely make diving easier!

Since you breathe the air the malabsorbtion aspect won't affect your nitrogen absorbtion.  Having less fat will, you will probably off gas faster (as if we need help with off gassing after surgery).
