One year running streak complete.
Yesterday, when I got to the one mile mark of my daily run, I completed 365 days of consecutive running. Last year, I was looking at a running streak site and thought it could be a cool accomplishment. The goal is to run at least a mile during each calander day for a year. Treadmills are fine and I used my gym during last winter a few times but not nearly as much as I thought I would. I also made the goal at least 1.1 mile just in case my GPS watch or the treadmill were off by 10%.
The first few months there were times when I would run the 1.1 on what would have been my rest days but as time went on and I got stronger and more used to it, the minimum crept up a bit. During October I didn't have one run under two miles and I have not calculated the final numbers yet but the average was over 3 miles.
There were tough times that I am most proud of such as running at midnight when I got home from work because a snow storm was due to come over night and I had to work the next day. There were 13 days when I was working double shifts and had to get up at 5:30 after going to bed at 1am to get it in. There was the week that I was at the hospital because my wife was in labor with my second boy. She had an unplanned c-section and was in labor for 38 hours. She understood that I needed to get out and I waited until we had visitors to go but still went.
I got married last year and went three weeks in July and August when I didn't run and it killed me. The great thing about the streak was the fact that I didn't have think about running that day. It took the anxiety away that I was experiencing about whether to run or not. The only decison was how far and what time. I work better that way.
A few minutes ago, at the bus stop, I thought to myself, "I don't have to run today". Unfortunately, I do because I need a long run and today is the only day it will work. I'll run tomorrow also. I am not sure where the streak will go because I am scared to stop with the routine I have gotten in. After 11 years working second shift, I am transfering to first next week. That will be a big change and I will have to see if I can adapt and keep the streak. If not, it's okay. The goal was a year and I can't believe I did it.
