PMS - post-marathon syndrome

I posted last week about being in a funk... and I'm slowly coming out of it.  I even ran on a treadmill yesterday (and I just have such a psychological problem with that - it makes me nuts).

Anyway, I opened an email from RunnersWorld this morning, and saw this article.  Sounds a lot like what I was going through, and I have recently completed my 2nd Half Marathon and my first Trail race, which I had kind of based my life around for a while.

I see my surgeon next week, and of course will be eager to make sure my labs are ok, and making sure to get my rest and take care of myself, but a little post-race letdown was probably a big chunk of my problem.

Beware!  It could happen to you, so be ready!

I actually read that article early this morning. I have been feeling the same way since triathlon season ended, especially since I finally bought a triathlon bike 2 weeks ago,and no triathlons any time soon. Plus after buying the bike I don't have the money to buy winter cycling gear,so I just freeze when I try to ride it. I have a bunch of running races this winter, but I really LOVE triathlons. It doesn't help that this month in particular is going by really slow, my husband will be home from Iraq in 3 weeks, so this is the time in the deployment where time starts to stand still, its been a long year.

you ain't kidding.  Today I did my longest run since my marathon.. a whopping 6.26 miles.  It might as well have been 30.  I'm hoping I can get back to where I was because I seriously am lacking that umph I had.

Anti-climactic letdown.

I did the same last year after my two 1/2 marathons.  I had focused and fixated on them so much that when they were done and I didn't have anything lined up after them, I was lost, unfocused and had no desire to do anything.

Same thing happened after my big Tri of this year.

I even planned races for the rest of the year to avoid the "what now?", but alas, they are 5Ks, and all with friends and family, so I'm not necessarily trying to PR, I'm trying to have fun.

I did 5 miles a couple of Sundays ago, you would have thought it was at GUNPOINT i was so miserable.  The day before I had run 3 miles with boyfriend and was happy as a clam.  go figure.

OK Sue, we're snapping out of it right now.  I'm off to Israel on Saturday for business.. and I will run 20 miles next week up the beach, and I'll like it :)

Do you think the anxiety comes from the fear of falling back into the old life style (pre-wls)?
I know for me, if I haven't kicked some serious butt in the gym or covered a lot of ground, I began to have anxiety. A race event  helps me remain somewhat calm and the fear of returning to my former self (pre-wls) goes a way for a bit. I  dread the fear showing it's ugly head again after my marathon. I hope I can continue to fight the fears. Hang in there. You are doing great and you will find another event or goal.
