Special Olympics 10K Trick or Trot Race Report

I did my 10k for Special Olympics yesterday.  I finished in 1:10:10, which is about ten minutes slower than my PR, but on the flip side, it was 4:50 faster than my goal of 1:15...so WIN!!

I knew the course going in, I had done the 5k last year and the 10k was just doing the course twice.  It starts off with about 1/4 mile of nice flat ground, then there is a solid 1/2 mile climb up hill (moderate), a nice down hill where I was able to make up some time and the rest of the course was pretty flat, until the last 1/2 mile, which is all up hill.  The first lap I ended up walking up part of the hill at the end...my knees were bothering me a little, but I grabbed some water at the water station and trucked on.

On the second lap I walked up that first hill, probably about half way, then started running again.  My quads were starting to talk to me, but I told them to keep quiet...because like Sue D.  says "I can do hard things."  I ran the rest of the way, which suprised me as I hadn't put in more than a 4 mile run in at least two weeks....I'd been cross training like crazy, but no real outside runs.  I ran up the hill at the end, I had to...there were two people behind me (that I knew about)  and I kept telling myself that they were in my age group and I couldn't let them pass me!!  Good thing I did, because they totally were in my age group!!

I had a great race - my time was pretty decent, the weather was perfect, I felt good, it was for a good cause and I had fun...it really doesn't get much better!!

I love the self-talk and the mantra too!  Gotta remember that one.  "I can do hard things."  Love it.  :D  Congrats on a good race!

Great job, Katie! The way you willed yourself to stay ahead of those people speaks volumes about your determination. And that moment in time can be something to draw upon when facing life's struggles in the future. You can always rememeber that, yes, you CAN do hard things! Wonderful job!
