Special Olympics 10K Trick or Trot Race Report
I did my 10k for Special Olympics yesterday. I finished in 1:10:10, which is about ten minutes slower than my PR, but on the flip side, it was 4:50 faster than my goal of 1:15...so WIN!!
I knew the course going in, I had done the 5k last year and the 10k was just doing the course twice. It starts off with about 1/4 mile of nice flat ground, then there is a solid 1/2 mile climb up hill (moderate), a nice down hill where I was able to make up some time and the rest of the course was pretty flat, until the last 1/2 mile, which is all up hill. The first lap I ended up walking up part of the hill at the end...my knees were bothering me a little, but I grabbed some water at the water station and trucked on.
On the second lap I walked up that first hill, probably about half way, then started running again. My quads were starting to talk to me, but I told them to keep quiet...because like Sue D. says "I can do hard things." I ran the rest of the way, which suprised me as I hadn't put in more than a 4 mile run in at least two weeks....I'd been cross training like crazy, but no real outside runs. I ran up the hill at the end, I had to...there were two people behind me (that I knew about) and I kept telling myself that they were in my age group and I couldn't let them pass me!! Good thing I did, because they totally were in my age group!!
I had a great race - my time was pretty decent, the weather was perfect, I felt good, it was for a good cause and I had fun...it really doesn't get much better!!
