One weekend, two days, two 5k's

Quite a busy weekend.  I did a 5k race both Saturday and Sunday.  Race reports as follows:
Saturday-- This race at Lake Zorinksi was a fund raiser for the Red Cross.  The temp was fairly cool and a little hilly, but pretty flat overall.  It was timed, but individual times were not kept, so no times posted.  I finished 32 minutes 54 seconds, with a distance if 3.14 miles.  I kept a pretty even pace of 5.9 miles per hour the entire run.  I dont really know where I finished, but there were still people crossing the finish line after I cooled down and leaving the parking lot.  Most were not serious runners, just out for a fun run.

Sunday-- This race was a little different.  Notice I called this a race and not a run, like Saturday.  This was my first race, as times were kept and posted.  The temp was a chilly 45 degrees, but with the wind it was really cold.  We got there about an hour before the race, got registered and started to warm up.  At 1:00 we lined up and took off.  The first mile there was a huge hill, down then up.  I am not used to hills, but to my surprise, I kept my pace and position.  The  rest of the race was fairly flat, with the exception of one small hill.  About 2.5 mile mark, I really started feeling yesterdays run, and started hurting.  At this point, the running demons was screaming at me to just walk, nobody will know.  But I prevailed and kept running, or jogging at least.  I finished officially at 33 minutes 10 seconds but the distance according to the gps, was 3.25 miles, slightly longer than the 3.1 miles that it was supposed to be.  Slower than I wanted, but all considering, great time.  The last 200 yards, I kept hearing hearing footsteps behind me and I vowed not to get passed this close to the finish line.  The last 50 yards, the lady was getting really close, but I held her off. After cooling down, I went to the score table to see times.  And to my surprise, I was in first place for my age group (male 35-39 yrs old).  Holy cow, I am going to get a medal!!  So I went back to the car to keep warm until the medal ceremony, still not believing this.  Sure enough, I got to go up and get a medal.  Really, my third run and I get a medal.  Now, to burst my bubble a little, there was only two people in my age group, but who's counting.  There was 40 runners in the 5k and I finished 26.  Pretty good for a guy, one year ago, weighed 460 lbs and could not even walk a mile, none the less run a 5k.  Cool.

After my race there was a 1 mile race that Jessica and Steven ran in.  I am really proud of them, they have not been running at all, and they just wanted to be like Dad.  That makes you really proud to watch your kids, do what you do.  Out of seven runners, Steven got second and Jessica got third.  Steven ran the whole mile without stopping and Jess, just had to stop once for a short walk.  The girl next to Jess, came in  third, but she also ran the 5k with her Mom.  Yes both her and her Mom beat me, by several minutes.  The girl in the pink shorts, also from the same family won the kids event several minutes ahead of the rest.  The little girl in the front, also from the same family, was last, but she was the so cute watching her run.  I am just so darn proud of my kids!

You were 460 a year ago??  WOW, this is truly an amazing accomplishment!!  And to medal, no less... congratulations!  I loved reading your report.  Wish I had done this when my own son was younger (he's 21 now, 6'4", 345, doesn't want to run in public, the ceiling's too low in the basement to run on the treadmill, has better things to do and way too many excuses, yada yada yada.. I want him to have VSG too)......anyway, how awesome that your kids are getting involved in fitness too.  Good Dad!

Stacy, yes, its been a hell of a year.  Feel free to check out my website, www.roytyson.com.
Its hard to motivate people, as I discovered, you can only loose weight if you choose to, whether surgically or not.

I am so fearful that my kids will end up as I did, so I try to keep them as active as possible.  My son came home from school the other day and was telling me they started a sitting club.  Get this...a club where kids can just sit and chill at recess if they do not want to go play.  I was so fuming mad! Childhood obesity is at epidemic levels and we now have sitting clubs....really!!

Good luck to you and your family.

You are taking the bull by the horns!  2 races in ONE WEEKEND!  That's pretty impressive!  (if I do two events in a month I'm pretty tapped!)

awesome report bro, way to rock it.  On the distances, it really varies a lot on the watches because of the weaving, but 3.25 seems a bit off (usually a 5k end up around 3.13m, an extra .025 miles or so).

Congratulations!  You've made amazing progress over the last year.  Cherish that medal as a symbol of all that you've accomplished.
