You don't have to complete the c25k program to run your 5k.Go and enjoy the experience.
Make it one of your training day, do the workout and then walk the rest for your cool down.
Or just do another cycle of run walk to get to the finish.
You will probably find that with all the excitement and energy there that you go further than you think you can.
Just make sure you don't get so caught up in the excitment that you go too fast and run out of juice before the end of the race.

I say go for it too!! If you reach the end of Week 9 before your event but you're still not running 3 miles, just keep training on the same schedule and add a couple of minutes to each run.
Do NOT do what I've done after the race though, which is to completely slack off!! Mine was four weeks ago today, and I think I've run three times since then. THREE. That's pathetic, after all the effort put in to getting the thing done in the first place. Got all these grand ideas in my head about doing longer events starting in the Spring, and an excellent, barely-used treadmill coming my way for super-cheap, and suddenly I don't want to get off my ass and run. That's changing today, I have GOT to get back on the road! Or the belt, depending on the weather (which has sucked and has easily fed right into my excuse list).
Plus I see my surgeon on Monday for my 9-month follow-up and I hoped to be down another 5 lbs. from where I am now, buuuuutttt.... oh well. If I can knock off another couple between now and then, good enough--he doesn't get all hyper over the numbers anyway, as long as they're going down. :)
Have a great weekend, everyone!

So I ran on the treadmill yesterday and outside today.... and I suck! I've gone from running almost 40 minutes straight four weeks ago to needing to take walk breaks starting every five minutes, then 4, then 3.....damn. I thought it was mental but realized that even though I'm not having actual asthma symptoms (my problem as a kid), the breathing is NOT free and easy like it was before the last few weeks, and I do think it's the weather. When I did have problems with allergies and asthma, it was always at it's worst in the fall, and now it's still when I'm most likely to get wheezy or stuffy or sneezy. So, I'm just gonna keep on going, take the walk breaks when I have to, and hope that by Spring I can easily do a 5K and not feel soooo labored to get it done.
See the surgeon tomorrow and I'm gonna be a few lbs. over where I wanted to be but I don't care 'cause I had an awesome NSV and a SV today!
