Shins and Knee issues...I feared this day would come. Need help!

I'm training for a marathon and I'm right in the middle of the "down and dirty" time of the program. I will log 34 miles after Saturday. I feared the day my body might start wearing down.
My shins are sore and every once in awhile my knee will hurt a tad. It isn't so painful that it causes me to stop. However, it doesn't make running any easier.  I need suggestions on how to get past this and ideas to prevent from an injury. Here is what I'm doing- I've purchased new shoes (was fitted by Run On) and bought special socks. I only run one day back to back, but the other days I have a rest day in between most running days. I ice and take pain meds when they're giving me an issue. Anything else I can do? Stopping the program is not an option. I've got to finish this goal. Please help.

i tend to overtrain a lot (i.e., i always end up with overuse injuries).  for me, i'm switching to 3 days a week running only with 2 days back to back for the goofy (long run on Saturday, and half the long run on fridays), i will do speed work the third day.  i will cross-train the other two days and take two rest days a week.  i still anticipate having issues.  other than that, when i start to flare up (IT band for me), i will take tylenol before my long runs and back off on the pace until i work through the issue.  sorry couldn't offer you any better advice than that.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I may need to cross train on one day to take the pressure off. I just have such of fear of not being prepared, but being injured would be worse.

Pretty much same as Bill for me, only I do no back to backs.  If it makes you feel better, I did no back to backs the last month of my marathon training, and I was taking at least 2 full rest days after long runs, sometimes 3.  Not a matter of choice.  Lots of cross training (for me I used the elliptical and the bike).

good move on not doing back-to-backs.  the ONLY reason i'm doing back-to-backs is because of the goofy, if i was training for a normal marathon, i would spread the three running days out.

Thanks for the advice. It looks like I might need to cross train a little. I just hope I prepare myself well for the marathon. Thanks again.
