Hi guys :) So, I will be starting my 6 months of documented weight loss classes in a few days. Did you guys exercise during these 6 months? I want to start, but I'm not sure what exercises would be good. I was thinking the treadmill? How long should I walk? Thanks for your help :)

Walking is always the best start. Build yourself up to walking about 3 miles or about 45-60 minutes. Then if all is good then begin the couch to 5k program. www.c25k.com

You find that you have peace of mind and can enjoy yourself, get more sleep, and rest when you know that it was 100% effort that you gave --win or lose.

I believe getting an exercise routine in place pre-op is important.  If you make exercise part of your daily habit then after surgery you will want to get back into your routine. I took up walking when I started my journey and before surgery was up to 4 miles every morning.  I had a hard time post-op not being allowed to do more than 30minutes at a time until cleared.  I now exercise 5-6 days a week.

Once the weight started comming off post op My walks were able to include some jogging and as I lose more weight and exercise more I find I am able to jog more.  I currently avg 4 miles of which I am able to jog about 2.

@paul. Are you going to sign up to do the Savannah River Bridge Run? Jillian, my wife and I are doing it. They have a 5k and a 10k route.

I hadn't planned on it.  My schedule prevents me from doing things that aren't fairly local.  I am planning on doing one at Lake Lanier next month and then the Jingle Jog in December.

My biggest plan now is to do the Peach Tree Road Race in July which is 10K.

Walking is one of the easiest and cheapest things you can do.  You can walk outside, inside, at the gym, inside your house.

If you are joining or belong to a gym, swimming is great if you have joint issues.  Any kind of weight lifting will be great since you can lose a lot of muscle mass when you lose weight, so building up is helpful.

Whatever you do, starting off slow and building up is important.  Don't set yourself up to walk 3 miles if you've never done it before.  Try 5 or 10 minutes, and see how it feels.  Do that a few times, and add more the next week.

Congrats on thinking about exercise now!
