Until I get a bike will it be ok to use a stationary bike in place of my rides?

You find that you have peace of mind and can enjoy yourself, get more sleep, and rest when you know that it was 100% effort that you gave --win or lose.

yes for fitness, but you will defiinitely need to get in a lot of road time before the race just so you are comfortable in the saddle.  biking has a decent amount of technical aspect to it.  for training, i probably put in 75% of my work on stationary bikes/spin classes/trainer @ home.
Where are we going??  And why am I in this handbasket??

right now.  somewhere.  somebody is working harder than you.

Bill, do you do a lifting regimen or anything other than just more time in spinning/riding to improve your bike?  I felt so inferior this weekend, I was getting passed by old ladies on commuter bikes :o  Nothing against old ladies on commuter bikes, mind you.

@ Andrew: Lunges, leg press, and squats...

To the OP: Yes stationary bike is fine if that is all you got. But, remember, aside from a fan blowing on you, you are not riding in wind, heat / cold, No hills (Up or down), no turns, and no clipless pedals. As Bill said, get on a real bike ASAP, but until then, do what you gotta do,,,

for me... stairmaster, and a lot of it.  i also do standard leg workouts, but i hit the upper body and core work harder because i'm constantly using my legs running, biking, and cross-training.

other than that, i highly recommend interval training, i will very rarely train on a stationary bike/trainer/spin class that doesn't have an interval aspect to it.  the best results are from HIIT (high intensity interval training), a lot of sprints and going over your AT.  like anything else, results come with time paid in :)

I'm thinking I may lay off runs longer than 15k for the next 2 months, and really focus on lower body strength (without ignoring upper body, naturally), like you said.  I have not really worked legs at all while training for the marathon - just didn't have it in me - my legs were shot most of the time.

Gonna do lots of lunges and squats, stairmaster and HIIT.  Just switched gyms to a Golds that has stairmasters (my planet fitness had none!) and spinning classes (Les Mills RPM)  and a pool, so  I guess I am gonna change it up a bit.  Then come Jan 1 I'll focus on the full HIM training program for May.

I just started back out on my bike....I've been spinning hard for over a year....and boy was there a difference in the ride....just having to actually haul my body weight with out the assistance of the stationary bike.....plus the clips take work getting used to getting your foot out of the clamp.....I have taken a number of spills just because I couldn't get my foot out of the clip trying to get off.  My recommendation, before trying to get on or off if you are on clips, make sure you are able to lean against a tree, stop sign, bench, person....or you will be like a falling tree going sideways with nothing to stop your fall.....it's funny afterwards....but scary while you are timbering over.....LOL

Clipless related falls are a little funny.. but  I really hurt my hip, enough that the wife has finally convinced me to go see a doctor about it.  I fell twice, and landed in the same spot both times.  since then I have had a lot of pain trying to bend over or if I stand a certain way, I almost double over.  It been like a month, so I guess I need to have it x-rayed.

yeah...they are funny only after the fact, and when you aren't hurt.  Get your hip checked out....I hope it's nothing serious.....

Yeah but they aren't very funny when you do it in a pack of people and take others out with you.
I was stopped in a big pack of people and I shifted my weight just a little too much.  Over I went into the lady next to me, who managed to stay up, but did get whacked by me and my bike as we went over.

I over compensate now.  Foot off the pedal and lean into the side with the foot on the ground.
