should I run the 5k?

I was doing the couch to 5k program and should have been ready to run a 5k on October 2nd.  However, I was doing the program by time and not by distance.  At the end, I could run for 30 minutes, but I was no where near running 3 miles.  I had a week to get my distance up before the race.  I have exercise induced asthma, and when I pushed myself to run the 3 miles, I had a lot of breathing trouble.  So, I cancelled my race on October 2nd.  Since then, I've been gradually increasing my distance .25 mile at a time.  I am supposed to run 2.75 miles tonight and then run the 5k race on Saturday.  I haven't had any breathing problems so far.  Tuesday night, I managed to pick up a cold some where.  I have a sore throat, and stuffy sinuses.  Should I just take some medication that morning and still run the 5k?  or should I wait until my cold is gone?  (I feel like I'm NEVER going to get this 5k under my belt)

If you can even finish the 5K having to walk near the end, I saw give it a shot!  If you've paid the money to register for a race, give it a go!  Adjust your goals to how you feel that day - stop and walk in the middle if you need to.

I have exercise induced asthma and carry my inhaler with me on every race and always take some puffs before the start.

Whether you walk or run this one, it's great to get out there and see what its like.

Feel better!

If it's just a cold and no fever or heavy cough , I would drug up and go for it. I'm not a DR though.
Good luck and have fun.

As long as its just a cold, go for it! worst case you can walk a bit of it, but it will feel so good to finish!  If this is your first, it will still be a PR no matter what!  :)

I am with the majority here and say GO FOR IT!

I just finished my first 5K a couple weeks ago, notice I said finish not ran.  I don't think it is as important that you run the whole 5K as it is you fini****  There is a huge sense of accomplishment in just finishing one.

You my even become hooked and end up doing more.

Baby you know I want you to do it. I can't wait to watch you cross that finish line with a big goofy smile cresting your beautiful face.

You find that you have peace of mind and can enjoy yourself, get more sleep, and rest when you know that it was 100% effort that you gave --win or lose.

well I KNOW I can run/walk the whole thing.  I've been trying to get to the point where i can run the whole thing.  I thought if you walked, then you failed.

I put that thought in your head and I'm sorry for it. That was my mindset going into my first one and I was wrong. after reading more and more of "The Non-Runner's Marathon Training Guide" I realized I was setting myself up for failure in a big way. So, throw away everything  I said before I got that book. Also, remember I'm learning all this stuff too.
