Not sure how to proceed

So I just got out of the hospital yesterday after a few days.  It appears my ulcer has returned I first felt in taking a drink during my 5K last week.

I have found a 5K I wanted to do next month and one in December but I have been placed on a full liquid diet for at least the next 4 weeks.  I spoke with the doctor and he assured me this has nothing to do with physical activity, but a result of the RNY.

Some questions I have are:

1) Should I reduce my morning 3.5 mile walk/jog
2) Should I just cancel hopes of doing a 5K next month
3) If not how should I proceed diet wise.  I know I will need to up the number of protein drinks I currently take but the rest of what my body needs to both exercise and then recover has me at a loss.

Thanks
Paul C.

Only you know how you will feel with only liquids. Trust how you feel and listen to your body. My gut reaction is to tell you to rest up and do as your DR says , but I know it's hard. If you push through make sure you get plenty of protein shakes and I would find one with some carbs in it since you will not be getting any from food. I know isopure has some rtd's with carbs (0 sugar) and some powders the same way. Good luck and remember they only said 4 weeks .... that's not too long to wait and get better if you decide to. It wouldn't be bad to do some shakes with whole or 2% milk as well to get some fat as well.

I have upped my protein shakes to 3-4 a day giving me approx. 90 grams of protein, all made with 1% milk.  I'm not sure on what I should be doing daily in the way of carbs so I need to get with my surgeon on this.

I plan on resuming my morning routine next Mon.  last night I resumed TKD classes.  I quickly learned how far I could push last night, and backed off when I felt I was pushing to hard.  Classes are about 50% fitness and 50% martial arts so needless to say I am working muscles I forgot I had.

Since I will be toning down my morning walk/jog for a bit I am going to start a ab routine on M,W,F

I am taking it as easy as I can. My biggest fear is taking it to easy and losing the habits I have been working to develop.

You only burn about 300 calories or so, running a 5K, and you could probably even get that energy through fat burning, given your current pace and fitness level. You're carrying your fuel with you--but for recovery, a combination of protein and carbohydrates is a good thing. 90 grams of protein per day should be plenty.

REMEMBER TO HYDRATE--it's of mega-importance!

Best of luc****ep taking your supplements, too. As more and more weight comes off, you will be amazed at how much easier it will be to run longer and faster! Keep up the good work!

Paul,

If you feel fine exercising - by all means exercise!  Being on a full liquid diet doesn't mean you can't still be active, it just means you might not have as much energy as you had before.  I'd say do what you can rather than back off too much.  I put off having my gall bladder removed because I wanted to do my first 10k race.  It wasn't always pleasant, but it worked out just fine.
