Oh my god... I did it now

Went for a little spin this a.m. with hubby.  So we rode for 5 minutes around where we live on dirt/sand residential road and just going UP the hill made me overheat and started a day long headache.

I kept going through though and we did one more little hill (seriously, these are not big hills, more like a little slope) it was fun and I thought "hey, you're fat but you can push yourself a little" but I just felt waaay overheated and didn't feel good at all.

I drank a protein drink, drank water before and stopped to drink during. We were gone maybe 30 minutes and hubby says we went 1/2 mile if that. It was around 79 degrees out. My face stayed red all day and my chest hurt from my heart thumping so hard.

What gives? Am I doing too much? What can I do to make it better next time? I'm in decent enough health but the headache and overheating and the chest pain made me worry some.  I love bike riding. The cool thing is, I didn't fall down yay!

Thank you!

Well, Perhaps you pushed it a little too hard. There is no way you did .50 miles. That's 1 mile an hour and you would fall over trying to keep the bike upright. I am not sure why you experienced this, just be sure to ease into things and keep after it! Cycling is a lot of fun...

I'd take it a little easier...start slow and just do a little bit more every day. Listen to your body, don't overdo! Congratulations on getting out there and making an effort!

Starting slow is best and then slowly increase time and hills.  I started at the Y with riding the exercise bike for 10 minutes, then increased 5 minutes each week.  I now ride 45 minutes at about 9 mph.  Not fast but a steady pace for me.  When I first started I rode at 4 mph.

In this way I did not overextend myself.  I do not own a bike so I do not ride outside.  But the same should apply.  A little mild fatigue is good but pain lasting more than 15 minutes is bad.  Back off a little and slowly build back up.

I agree with Dan, I bet you went more than 1/2 mile! Just keep at it. I stared my journey out SMO and yesterday I just biked 30miles with no problem!

Cycling is such fun- enjoy!!!
