I survived!

Well yesterday was the big day, and I don't know why but I was nervous all day.  I mean I do 3.5 miles most days before work but for some reason doing it with a large group and a timer had me nervous all day.  I made sure to stay hydrated all day to minimalize and chance of dehydration.

Event started at 6pm with the run starting at 6:30.  I checked in and got my number then found a place to stretch and just walk around with my wife.  The people from work that were going to do it with me all had "Other" plans they had forgotten bout, no biggie.  I did meet up with a guy that I know from my sons karate school, plus a few runners from work.

6:20 they called time to line up and I managed to grab a spot about midway back in the pack.  Watching the clock count was driving me nuts and then it was time.  I started off at a medium pace (for me) jog and was able to maintain it until the bottom of the first hill.  I walked up the hill and then jogged down.  I ultimately settled into my routine using Light posts as distance markers.  I would jog 3 walk 4 Jog 2 walk 4.  I finished the first mile in a little over 14 minutes and was pretty happy with that.   I managed to cross the finish line in 46:32, which was huge for me as I really pushed myself to run/jog as much as I could and when I walked with was a brisk walk.

Thank you for everyones support and best wishes.  I can honestly say this won't be my last.

Great Job!!!  I went to my first 5k alone and met up with a lady and ran with her!  Runners are such friendly people.

Yes there was.  A lady over heard me talking to my friend on how this was my first 5K and reasons for doing it. After finishing hers she came back out about 100yds from the finish and ran the finish cheering me on.  Was Very cool.

Good Question.

I learned a lot of lessons from this one, even something as how often I need to at least sip to remembering to bring something other than water for after I was done, next time maybe some SF popsicles to help cool down.  But like all else this is a learning experience for me.
