Vintage 5k Run-Walk

With the Sonoma valley into the swing of the wine harvest, they put on a nice little 5k run-walk today and a kids 1/2 mile run.

Frankly i've been quite the slacker lately, well more than just lately, and my weight has suffered as a result.  I have been up 17 pounds from this time last year.  I really haven't done anything since my 70.3 in July, and I just can't seem to get motivated to do anything.  My results at the 70.3 were a little depressing and I guess I just kind of gave up.  I hadn't seen or accomplished the results I wanted, and I'm not sure I have it in me to get to where I want to be, so like I said, I basically quit at that point.  I have had the occasional interval run on the treadmill and a weekly bike ride in the 60-100 mile range, but that's about it.

My wife saw the flyer for this little race and asked me if I wanted to do it.  So I decided to sign myself up for the 5k and my son up for the 1/2 mile race.  My son has been doing more running than I have. They are actually making the 1-3rd graders run laps.  Good for them!

With my lack of running or any real notable exercise, I knew that there was the potential for this to be a miserable let down.

The race starts at Sebastiani winery and wanders through a few dirt roads and Bartholomew Park Winery, and Buena Vist Carneros (oldest winery in CA)

Anyhow the race started, and I took off with the pack, it was a beautiful day.  It looks like we are finally getting to have summer here in Northern California.  The first quarter mile felt great, 1/2 mile still feeling good. 3/4 mile hey this aint so bad I guess I haven't lost any thing even with a couple months of being a slug.  1 mile and I've caught a lot of those people who took off fast at the start of the race.

It looks like the garmin lost signal for a bit, because just after mile 1.5, it has me doing a 26 minute mile.  Now I'm slow, but not that slow and I never stopped.

I made it to the finish, but boy was I said piece of work when I got there.  Last year I ran a 1/2 marathon for my 42nd birthday, this year I could barely do a 5k.

I have started watching what I eat and have given myself a 5 day challenge to try and start back on track.  I have lost 5 of those 17 pounds I had gained, and I'm encouraged to start working out again.

Now for the good part of the day.  My son ran his entire race.  I followed along behind him just to make sure he was o.k. because the race wandered through a couple blocks of a residential area and I want to make sure he mad all the right turns.
He got a first place ribbon for his age and he generally had a good time.
I was so happy to see him have some success and a smile on his face after exercising.

Scott. For the vast majority of us, struggles are part of the program. It sucks but you know both sides of the fence and I know that you won't get too far from the good side.

I got as high as 30 lbs from my WLS low. Now I am about 15 but it's up and down.

Keep your chin up and congrats on the 5!

Scott,

Though Dan makes all this seem easy, most of us cycle though feeling motivated and battling our demons.  I'm sure that inner critic of yours will peel away those last 12 pounds and whip you back into shape.  Anyone who can finish a 70.3 after breaking a collar bone is a hero in my book.

I agree...you did this once and you can do it again....I have been feeling less motivated to go to the gym lately and reading your posts as well as everyone's has made me see where I have come from and where I can go...so as I finish the last of my Cheese Nips...I vow to do better!!!!  Thank you for inspiring me!!!

Scott,

I completely agree with Cassie. Your strength and determination after your injury motivated me! You've had some down time, and now it is back to digging deep, and getting out there. What a great experience to see your son complete his race! You are obviously HIS hero!

It knows that it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve.
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running.

Scott,

Good for you buddy! Glad to see you out there and making it happen... Just keep fighting the good fight. We ALL have our Ebbs & Flows. I certainly dealt with my demons when I took 8 weeks off for PS... It's all good buddy, it ain't about the destination, it's about the journey!

Bro, no advice I could give you, but I can tell you what an inspiration you are to me.   Honestly, a "weekly" ride in the 60-100 mile range and you're slacking :)  I don't think it will be too hard to get back on that horse.  Seems lie you need a new "climbing mount everest" goal.

Wow, you might be a little normal!!!  Most people can't stay in the "ON" position all the time.  That's what this journey is about - little setbacks that make us collect ourselves and push forward.    You'll get your mojo back!
